Airbourne - you have a great sampling of the best drums ever made... Nice.

Larry,

Thanks so much! It has taken a little while for me and I will keep looking for cool drums. I have learned a lot along the way and even sold some kits I wish I had not. I actually sold one of my beloved Sonor kits not long ago (S Classix) but I will be getting another Prolite or SQ2 kit to replace it. Sonor offers me an amazing "vintage" sound in modern reliability and in the case of SQ2 just about anything I want.

I have the Rogers floor tom waiting for a wrap (Kent floor tom that matches closely pictured) and Clubdate floor tom should be done today.

I like the idea of keeping the matching snare with the kit vs. on my shelf as I have been doing.

Yes - the 24" bd with the old (30's) calfhide ...retucked....sounds killer. That mellow...deep musical thud is music to my ears. This kit is a ton of fun to play. The 1936 Super Structure snare drum is pretty nice too....just a bit tempermental to get the simpathetic buzz toned down but I'm working on it. I copied (General Paint matched it for me) the Gretsch Burnt Orange finish from a Gretsch swatch (a real chunk of shell with Burnt Orange Gloss finish). My finish here is a stain with NO gloss....I left it satin because it looked so nice....I think. I took the kit down last week and restained teh bass and rack tom...two more coats....that brought the two drums closer in shad to the snare and floor. It's all trial and error. I haven't got photos of the kit restained yet but I will take them soon enough. I often use my 12x14 WFL and my 12x14 wmp Carltom (pictured here) toms switching out the Gretsch 9x13 here and use a Gretsch 24x14 WMP Cocktail drum off my hats too. BTW - The Carlton tom once belonged to Bunn Carlos - it's signed by him inside. I bought the drum on eBay. I messaged Bunn on a drum forum and he got back to me with some of the drums' history and told me he did sign it. I retacked the reso head. The finish is factory WMP - no badge though and it didn't have a badge when Bunn owned it. He got the drum from King Louie.

Gary, I LOVE that Gretsch set. My very first set was a 1946 WMP Gretsch 4-piece, so I've always had a fondness for those lugs. I can almost hear what that bass sounds like with the calfskin heads. Very nice!Mike

Something about big old funky drums. They really are just fun to play. I've been gigging my '40's Radio Kings for everything, lately. I'd be real curious what it sounds like with calfskin. How stable have they been? Mine's single tension, might be tougher. Fiberskin's pretty good, but it's not the same. Been using a '20's NOB Pioneer with them most of the time. Fun combo, great brush snare that can kick hard when you slap it! Kenny Aronoff loved it!

Kenny Aronoff signed your drum! That's a keeper right there. Great old drum. It definately would be nice with some very good calfhide......a slunk resonate and maybe one of these Irish Kalfo heads.

They're not cheap but I think they're worth the extra money especially for a drum like yours. When you think of it....it's only a few dozen beer or so or maybe a tank of gas.

I just picked up this WFL kit a week ago and can't stop playing them. Tuned up high for jazz - they are makin' my DAY! Now that I have the jazz kit, I just dialed down my Slingerlands a bit. They sound so boomy and old school. I love both of these kits. Really inspiring. And, I got this old Zephyr lug WFL snare earlier this year. Can't put it down either.

Took a couple lessons from him. Know he's fond of NOB Ludwigs, so I took it to him. We set it up his way, showed me how he picks heads, tuning, rims, etc. Then we played it. First response was "that's a great drum". We modded it to his liking. Played it again. Next comment was"that's a great f***king drum!". Pretty intimidating, being in a small practice room with him. He made that old snare work out.....

I have some WFL toms - 1930's - that I use with my 50's orphaned Gretsch shellpack and my 40's Gretsch kit. I use the 12x14 toms as 'rack' toms....they go well with the 22&24" bass drums. Two have Zephyr lugs and the one....as you can see....has some other pretty cool lugs....I've not come across them before this one drum.
