Ludwig Hammered bronze with WRONG Snarebed Last viewed: 20 minutes ago

Has anybody ever seen this?

A few weeks back I bough a Ludwig Hammered Bronze but never really made it to sound great. I tried a lot of things, new heads, tried new wires of different makers..... but eventually gave up and put it to the shelf...

I never even considered what I found out now.

I took off the heads again to take a closer look at the snare again. And what do I find? See for yourself:

The snarebed is not at it's supposed place, or the other way to say it: after the shell was made someone drilled all the holes wrong...

The snarebed really isn't even right in between two lugs but slightly off center...

This is a late 80s shell so the drum has been around for a while...

I am wondering:

- did nobody ever notice?

- has the original owner been had?

- have I been had?

unfortunately I don't have any contact information about the seller (which was the 1st owner) anymore.... so... what to do?!

Wow...tough break, man. I have never seen that before. I'm guessing the only way to correct is to re-drill the strainer and butt plate one panel over. I know it's a long shot, but I wonder if Ludwig would send you a shell if you contacted them?

I actually just contacted them, let's see what they say..

I wouldn't think so though cause it's a late 80s drum... I just basically wanted to let them know.....

Man that's a bummer to see. Maybe LW will offer to repair the shell at least? Does it have a serial number on the badge? Maybe they could tell from that? I dunno I'm not much of a LW guy. I wonder if it was just a factory error that slipped out or it somehow sold as a #2 drum? Not sure how all that works in the drum world. Nice snare though I hope you can get it sorted out somehow.

If they don't replace it (you never know, they might) then I would re-drill it as I am sure it will sound great.

If I was working for Ludwig I'd fix it just to not have it floating around as a huge embarrassment. I'm sure it can be brazed up and brought back to spec.

it happens. i've seen it on many midline wood and metal snares (incl with no snare beds) but not a top of the line snare. but still, they grab a shell and put it in the drilling machine. i'm sure it happens and usually gets caught.
