Ludwig Rocker Questions? Last viewed: 3 hours ago

So I picked up this Ludwig kick drum locally as a donor drum so I could use the parts to finish up a couple other kick drum projects and noticed some things I had not seen before. Any clarification would be great on the following:

When did Ludwig use B/W badges with the rounded corners and no serial numbers?

When did they use Classic Lugs on Rockers?

This kick has 1/2 inch curved Spurs versus the straight Spurs I see on most other B/W drums. 1 side has a circular marking that looks as if maybe the owner replaced the straight with the curved Spur but the other side does not. Did they ever use the 1/2 curved Spur on these drums?

This thing is super heavy compared to my 60's kick drums. Does onyone know how many plies? I count 5.

Thanks in advance for any help!

My understanding is that the first version of the Rockers did indeed use the classic lugs. Though they weren't offically called Rockers in the catalog? I believe this should help. And yes my Rockers were heavy. And loud as ****!

Thanks Larry! But wouldn't the first version of Rockers have the pointier version of the b/w badge?

Also for a while there were rocker and rocker II.

Rockers had all small classic lugs except for the bass drums, and those only had 8lugs with black wood hoops. Rockers were natural finish inside and had wrapped finishes. They could be ordered with modular hardware.

Rocker II drums had the "standard" lugs with telescoping Spurs and classic tom holders, wrapped finishes and "granitone" finish inside.

Both rocker and rocker II used tiwanese hoops and tension rods but the shells were made at the Monroe N.C. factory.

Later versions of the rockers were just tiwanese drums.

This is from the '84 catalog. Looks like the original Rocker from that period had B/W badges and the curved spurs (it did not have a Pearl tom mount though).

The Spurs look to be in the wrong location.

It looks like they are up next to the lugs in the catalog.

Whoa! Good eyes Clubdate! The spur hole location on this drum is not right for either style. Weird! They are just to the left and right of the bottom 2 lugs. There are no other holes other than the ones added from the Pearl Mount. What the !?!?!

I have 2 Rocker bass drums. 1 has a pointed B/W badge the other has a rounded B/W badge. Both have Classic lugs. Both have Club date style spurs.

I've seen some pretty hinky placements of the arch spurs over the years, all done by the factory, so I wouldn't read too much into how they are placed either on this drum or in the catalog picture.

I have one bass drum, totally original, and the spurs are off by a couple of inches from each other. Apparently so they wouldn't hit each other inside the bass drum when retracted. The 80's weren't necessarily the high point for Ludwig QC.

Something else to take note of is that the rocker drums were the first ones built in the "new" Monroe North Carolina plant. So just like when Gretsch moved or any other number of drum companies, there was likely some new workers who did things differently.

Also I'm sure there were a ton of those old clubdate Spurs hanging around.
