Ludwig Supraphonic COB Last viewed: 45 seconds ago

From Hobbs

I want to add this about the weight: I weighed this snare @ 7 lbs 6.7 oz; & I could swear that the Ludalloy Supras I've had & sold in the past weighed in the 6+ pound range. I know COB are quite heaver. If this is a rare steel shell then wouldn't that make it heavier than Ludalloy?H

Seems to me it would be. That weight seems close to a COB Super (these are actually called Ludwig Super, not Supraphonic). If the magnet really sticks - I mean really sticks - it can't be Ludalloy or brass. And if it's all original, could be a COS Super. Looks original to me and the finish seems very smooth.

Hmmm, mysterious Supra.

The serial number is circa '64.

The shell and others seem to be legit.

COB is around 8.3lbs. COS Supra? How's the sound difference from Ludalloy?

Not sure if there is any mystery here people.

I took a fridge magnet last night before bed and just had to see for my self.

I placed it on my '70's B&O Supra and sure enough it stuck, barely mind you but it stuck. This must mean there is a very small percentage of steel in a Ludaloy shell. I tried the magnet on my Black Beauty and Rogers Dynasonic and no stick whatsoever...brass

Sorry Hobbs, not trying to burst your fantasy....

Try a fridge magnet yourself on your Supras guys...

Hobbs has said several times it really sticks. I can't get any magnet, not even a fridge magnet, to stick to mine. I accept that there might be varying degrees of fe in the shells of different eras; but if I hold my drum vertically, a fridge magnet falls off. In a case like this, it's probably time to take off a lug and gently scratch away at a lug hole. Also with mine, take a look at the colour of the interior of the bearing edges in daylight:

Might not be the same for different eras. But as you have said, it's all about how strongly the magnet sticks.

troutstudio, good point.

There is a slight amount of fe in both my 70's Supras otherwise the magnet would not stick. But as we know, Ludaloy is predominantly aluminum. Maybe the mystery of Ludaloy is solved :)

The little magnet also stuck to my '2001 Monroe Supra (photo below), although just barely. If the magnet was larger and heavier, the weight of the magnet would have overpowered the attraction to the small amount of steel in the alloy material and fallen off the drum. This is why larger, heavier magnets do not stick...

This indicates a small fe content in Ludaloy. The Monroe had the same slight attractive force as in the 70's versions. When the magnet was placed on the hoops, it really grabbed!

I'm inclined to believe Hobb's Supra in question on this thread is of the same formula as other Supras, Aluminum, iron and a small amount of tin. Hobbs' magnet is very small and light and therefore sticks.

Cheers!

It wouldn't be the 1st time my bubble was burst. So no biggie. There's the part about the weight that's tricking me here; the part @ it being nearer to a COB. The magnet does NOT stick at all to the hoops, btw.

Hobbs,

Not trying to burst you bubble!

The reason the magnet does not stick to the hoop is that it's brass. The hoops in '64 were brass.

Ludalloy is an alloy of aluminum, and at least 13% Zinc. The zinc contributes to the malleability of the metal, and allows the metal to be formed more easily.

I'll suggest for the edification of all that Supra's around this time be weighed. There's still the bit about the snare in ? weighing over a pound+ more than a Ludalloy versions of the same era {unless I'm wrong about the difference in the weights}.

How could it be that I'm the 1st to notice the magnet business? All those Supras on ebay & not one mentioning that a magnet slightly, yet unequivocally, sticks to some shells? What I've noticed is that buyers ask about magnets because they're after COB's ... & are then, sometimes, told that magnets do not stick to Ludalloy either ... check the weight, so&so, remove a lug & scrape away, because these are the ways to know for sure ... except now, here we go with a Supra version that a magnet sticks to.

Moreover, I went & tried lesser, wimpy magnets & THEY ALL STUCK TO THE SHELL.

This is not me just trying to nail down MY snare as a very rare cat. It seems like a unique tack perhaps; perhaps not.
