Hate to break the news..but..someone DID paint them..that's why the date stamp is so faint...It's African Mahogony under that paint..They must have taken all the parts off first...I found a 1970's 16 by 18 Premier FT the other day,and that was painted black over the African M.Bummmer......

Yes it appears that at some point, long ago someone decided to "freshen up" the interiors with some whilt paint. But then again the "new paint" is not on the lug screws and it is not on the shell underneath where the washers were.

I dont really matter to me, if it effects the value then big whoop, I am keeping them. And If I do decide to sell all I need is 300.00 to break even. The only concern would be sound quality but Im pretty sure they will still sound half way good. And Im not 100% sure they have been painted. If they did then they must have removed the groments, no paint on them and no signs of masking tape.

Because its African Mahogany should there have never been whit paint? Did they only paint maple shells? But like I say, I dont really care either way.

I agree w/ blair (if he means that white's there at all!!!): I have a snare w/ the same sort of weird looking paint job (other than the expected solid white) - #132xxx, but w/ a red date stamp. If my memory is good, this isn't the 1st time I've seen this.

OK guys... just kinda thinking out-loud here, so I might be a little hard to follow.

The pics of the interiors Jeff posted on page 2 are definately painted mahogany interiors. The mahogany just won't hold paint like the maple interior shells we're used to seeing.

So, does that really mean they've been repainted? How many "transitional anomilies" have we seen with Ludwig? I've seen plenty -- and just about the time I think I've got them all figured out it seems another one pops up...

Anyway, got to go.

When did Ludwig use the white paint? Now the bass drum looks alittle different white, more solid but its maple. If a person painted them they sure did a good job of getting paint on the shell only. I can take more pics if anyone care that much about it. For me, I dont care much. It is an interesting mystery if anything.

Im still pumped about the drums! Just love em!!!

Without double-checking anything, Ludwig went to white painted interiors sometime in the early 1960s. Before that they had a clear-coated mahagony interior.

They went from the white painted interiors to a clear-coated maple interior sometime in 1969, when they also changed over to the B/O badge (but there was some "overlap" in 1969 with badges and interiors).

Sometime in the 1970s they went to the granitone interiors. All of this was with their 3-ply w/rings shells.

When they went to the 6-ply maple shells, they went back to clear maple interiors (and also to the "rounded corner" B/O badge at some point during this transition).

In the 1980s, they made MANY other changes that are very hard to keep up with and keep straight. Shell composition, number of plies, interior finishes, etc. Partly because of their different "lines" of drums. To me, that was really Ludwig's "let's try anything" era... then of course came the "dark ages" of Asian made Ludwigs.

Sorry for the ramblin's...

Bill you are a walking drum encyclopedia. I don’t know how you guys can keep all of these dates and facts straight.
