Price Gouging On Shipping Last viewed: 6 hours ago

I am trying to understand why people on ebay are allowed to price gouge on shipping. I thought ebay put some type of rule or something in to effect to stop that. I mean when someone wants to charge you $15 to send you six lugs when you can send them for $5 in the provided USPS box that ships anywhere in the U.S. I sent a guy 12 NOB Slingerland lugs for $6 useing one of those boxes. I never charge more than what it cost me to send an item to someone. I realize greed has taken over our society. It just bugs me when people do this. There are a lot of drum part companies who do it too. I just think it rediculous when I order a couple small parts and the shipping is as much or more than the price of the item or items I am ordering. They charge you $7 or $8 and the paper package comes and it is $1.50 postage. I understand the time and inventory etc. but come on really!

In my description listing for eBay, I state that I charge $3.00 for CON. U.S. and $5.00 for Int'l shipping. They cover insurance and the charge that eBay now gets for shipping. Whatever is left over, covers packing materials and sometimes it doesn't even do that.

Tape, boxes and packing materials cost money, I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay for that out of my pocket, I may lose a customer or two, but with the fees that eBay gets now, if someone wants what I have to sell, that little amount that I tag on isn't going to mean a whole bunch after insurance and fees.

I have overcharged people, but I refund them as soon as possible and let them know it's an overage. That's easier than getting most people to send more money because you made a mistake on shipping.

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

I have found the Flat Rate boxes actually cost more in shipping then using your own box when shipping drum parts.

If you are shipping big slabs of lead, then FR is going to be cheaper.

Also,I like to double box about everything I ship, and with FR boxes, there is barely enough room to do that, and also allow extra room for bubble wrap/popcorn etc.......Also,the FR boxes are very thin...makes me nervous just to use them.

When you ship via the PO,the total is right on the box,so if someone asks $15 to ship, and it's only $6 on the box.........BUSTED!

Yes, seems like in the past couple of months sellers are charging more for shipping...sometimes a ridiculous amount. Maybe they are trying to add a little additional "profit" to the sale. But, they won't be selling to me...I refuse to bid on something when the shipping charges are "nuts". Maybe they are taking a lesson from the "$19.95 deals" on TV. I think the "Shipping and Handling" charges generally cover the cost of the junk, oops, I mean "the product" and the $19.95 is gravy.

I am basically talking smaller items. And yes, on larger items packing material and that type thing, of course you can't lose money. and I agree Ebay charges to much commision. USPS never charges me for the flat rate boxes and the small one's are fine for lugs, screws, small stuff. It is like I said when I am charged $15 when it can easily be sent in a $5 package and usually is. When I see a item that has a obvious profit margin on the shipping I won't bid on it.

What's wrong with tacking on 10 bucks to box it up, go to the PO and wait in line? there is at least an hour of time taken up to do that.

If you don't like it don't bid or send them a msg and call em out.

In the soft market we reside in now, sellers are finding ways to increase overall revenue and shipping and handling charges are a good way to do that. When I see requests for handling charges, high shipping charges, pay pal as a gift or pay the 3 dollars, anything that resembles the seller trying to push off his share of the cost of doing business, I pass right over the ad to the next one. Like Superchief said, the decisions is ultimately the individuals who is hitting "bid"

People seem to feel you should buy all sorts of expensive materials, lug heavy boxes to UPS/PO etc, stand in line, and just throw that in.......

Their reply? "No one else charges for that stuff" I usually hear.....

I have kept track of how much materials I use in boxing up a 3-4 piece kit PROPERLY,and it is around $40-$50! Not including my time!

I'm just supposed to "throw that in"?Sumo Dude

Of course this is a pipe dream, as it would only work if there was a "real" and reliable way of holding sellers accountable-- not "Feedback." But there is a very simple fix-- make shipping the seller's responsibility. If you are in business you should ought know how to calculate your margins, given your overhead. Make shipping included with the closing price. Then sellers would adjust their starting bids accordingly and buyers would BID accordingly. Offer a percentage discount off the final price for local pickup. Again, this won't happen unless there is a real disincentive to just throwing it in a paper bag and sending it through the mail.

First, if you think the shipping is unreasonable, don't bid. If anyone "allows" this behavior, it is the buyer.

Second, the amount on the postage sticker is only a part of the total cost. Shipping materials cost money, and so does gas and a vehicle to take it to a shipping place.
