Real Floor Tom versus Hanging Floor tom Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

it's an accepted and well-established fact that a tom mounted on a snare stand has less resonance than a hanging tom. why would it be any different with a floor tom? the simple fact is that hanging floor toms have more resonance than legged floor toms. as further support for this proposition i refer to the several products that exist to enhance the resonance of legged floor toms, such as pearl's rubber feet and similar products.

I recently rack-mounted my floors. I flipped them upside-down to put the leg brackets closer toward the top of the drum. Each drum is mounted using L-rods in the two leg brackets that are closest together. They're fairly stable, but I'm considering going back to legs. The rack won't let me get the 16" in as close as I'd like.

I didn't notice a huge change in tone because I've been playing around with different tunings and heads.

Yeah... If I don't go back to legs, I'm considering trying TWO of Gibraltar's universal ISO-mounts for each floor tom to further isolate them. Two L-rods per drum keeps them pretty rigid.

Hanging "floor" toms aren't floor toms. They are just bouncy sagging toms....much like my ex........er never mind...LoLoLoLoSeriously though, not a fan of the "hanging floor tom".....they move around too much to my liking. Traditional floor tom legs are much lighter and easier to carry around than another heavy stand.

Too funny, Ludwig-dude! I love floor toms with legs. The one exception was a newer, more modern, kit I built. The "hanging" floor tom was a 12x14 and sounded very good. Other than that, I prefer floor toms with legs!

It's true that a resonant shell hanging with RIMS mount is allowed to resonate properly. Bob Gatzen explains all that quite well using the N&C CD maples to explain it. I have a Brady jarrah kit with suspended RIMS mounted toms which sounds amazing. My other kit is WFL with 16 x 16 FT on legs. I prefer them on legs! The 14" & 16" Brady can be a bit cumbersome on the stand. Would be good with these if they had the option of either way. Having the FT on legs is great with the vintage kit and gives the cocktail option too. Hanging does allow for them to be moved to more comfortable playing angles though.

I have both, but I prefer them with legs.

Maybe I'm just too retarded, but I find it easier to get them positioned just right.

And it doesn't bounce with the legs, as you all know, although my magically hovering floor isn't like an 18x20, and it is attached quite nicely imo, so it doesn't fly around as badly as some floors I've played on other kits.

My 69 silver sparkles have a 8-10-12-13-14-15- concert toms and a 16 floor tom.

I recently aquired a 16 and 18 X 12" deep marching toms i am planning on converting to concert toms. 6 ply with the rivets. Too bad I rewrapped my

20" floor tom in sky blue pearl already. I could have 8 rack toms and 2 floor toms. There was a 22" luddy floor tom on ebay a while back.

Besides, hangars are for airplanes.

Yes...hangArs are for airplanes...hangErs are for hanging things...lol...just sayin...LoLoLoLo

I have a 16x14 hanging floor tom on my Sonor Phonics kit, and actually like the sound a LOT better then my 18x16 floor tom...so much so, I actually put it out of commission, and use it for parts...it may be sacreligious, but like everyone said, its a preference...and I do agree with the hanging toms having more resonance...if this wasnt true, Tama wouldnt have invented the floating tom legs on their floors...and so on.

And then we bring up the whole theory on elevating bass drums...you elevate a bass drum off the floor for more resonance, correct? Same thing on legged floor toms vs hanging floor toms.

A floor tom with legs that sit on the floor is of course going to be muted more than a hanging tom that has nothing touching the floor besides the stand its on, allowing the shell of the hanging tom to resonate and vibrate more on the mount...make sense?

I haven't needed to hang a floor tom since the discovery of Pearl isolating leg tips. The Tama tips are good, too. The very specific way that the stand needs to be positioned in order for the hanging drum not to tip over is a drag. But,my mounted tom IS on a tom stand, not the bass drum.Hanging a 13 is not like hanging a 16.I can't position my mounted tom far enough left (from sitting position)since it's an Omni-Mount L-rod,without a stand.
