Real Floor Tom versus Hanging Floor tom Last viewed: 19 minutes ago

I will always love the traditional floor better than a hanging tom. The only hanging toms I've ever liked were designed by Yamaha. They had a slight bounce, but they resonated very well. It was the YESS mount and the very heavy low stand. I did not cinch up the tom on the rod which allowed it to ring a bit more. Oddly enough, I didn't like all of Yamaha's hanging tom mounts. I didn't like the Recording Custom ones. I DID like the Rock Tour Custom ones. They were different mounts. Go figure.

I have my tama's set up down at our jamhole. They are the house drums. This kit consists of 4 hangin toms 8-10-12-14 with the Star-Cast mounting system.

and a 16" real floor tom.

The rack toms are all hangin' from a Pearl Rack. They never budge at all. The aluminum square tubing on the pearl rack wont let the toms slip even if the clamp gets a little loose. I have heard that the clamps on the Gibralter racks with the round tubing allow the brackets to slip if they ever loosen.

This kit has been in place for 5 years. I put new eveans g2 heads on all the toms a few months ago and added my DW solid shell snare with a evans dry and the emad kick drum head. It sounds incredible!! The Zildjian K's are pretty dam tuff also. I had a brand new set of sabian hhx evolution cymbals. Both the crash cymbals got cracked. I was pretty upset over that.

The only experience I've ever had with hanging floor toms was a 14 inch Tama shell I had on my first kit. It was rim mounted, it bounced constantly, sagged every time I played, and I swear it NEVER stayed in tune when on that mount. Legs all the way.
