Roy Haynes, Slingerland Jet, Ludwig Jazzette -coincidence? Last viewed: 6 hours ago

Hey, keep those pics coming!

Slingerland never put out a 12x18 BD, did they?

I've got an old 12x18 Slingerland marching tom (was part of a 12x14, 12x16, & 12x18 set) that I was thinking about converting to a BD. I knew that Ludwig made the 12x18 for the Jazzette set, but don't remember a Slingerland that size.

Did Ludwig ever put out a set with a 14x18 BD? If they did, it would have to have been pre-mid 60s...

Yes, Ludwig DID put out an 18 X 14 bass drum for drum set use. I have seen several drum sets with that size bass drum. In each case, the rail consolette was mounted in the off-center position (unlike the Jazzette's centered position) AND there was also a cymbal mount on the bass drum. It has been 'argued' that this configuration isn't a Jazzette, but is, in fact, closer to a Downbeat configuration with a special custom-ordered 18" bass drum instead of the typical 20 X 14 that the 'official' Downbeat configuration was listed as having. In fact, the examples I have seen are usually late 60's/early 70's. But believe me, THIS is a point of contention among many people as far as what that configuration should be called.

I wish I could locate a picture of Roy Haynes playing a Jet kit.

Anyone?

Nope, not for drum sets. As far as marching sizes...I have no idea.

Brings back some good memories..

My first real kit was the Jet oufit (as pictured) in Blue Satin Flame.. 1967..

I spotted the jet kit in a store in Sydney CBD it was in Gold Satin Flame in the window..drooled over it for about a month. By the time I gathered some finances (had no cash), The gold one had gone but they had a boxed Blue Satin Flame in stock. Would you believe my Uncle had to put up his Unit, (apartment) as collateral against the loan. 500 bucks AU.

That kit was so small it fitted easily into the back seat of a VW beetle. It was a nice sounding kit & with the Chrome BD Hoops/Rims, looked a million bucks.. "they must have been Beater Saver rims" ha ha..

There was an option for a Bd tom mount, but I was not going to wait the three months shipping..

Wish I'd kept it ...just like many others along the way..

Backbeat .. you still have one don't you?

Cheers

Yes, just like in the photo. She's in great condition, been out twice since I got her. First time was just after I bought them, so I could play it and take some photos. The second time was at the San Diego Drum Show, where I let anyone have a go on them.

Ignore the nasal voiced moron who doesn't play too well, just admire the sound...;)

You're right, O-Lugs. I got a chance to play BBK's Jet at the San Diego Vintage Drum show and it's sweet! Thanks again, BBK.
