Backbeat..

Thanks for the clip.. that kit looks in excellent condition.. I'm real envious.

I'll dig through some photos for a colour shot.. this is all I can come up with at present. 1970's.

Cheers

John

You're right, O-Lugs. I got a chance to play BBK's Jet at the San Diego Vintage Drum show and it's sweet! Thanks again, BBK.

No problem....I brought it for others to enjoy as well. Hoping there's gonna be another show this year!!

Regarding Roy, he gave me the sports car story in response to my question on the subject some 20 years ago!

Nobody in this thread has addressed the issue of timbre with regard to wood v. metal hoops.

A few years ago I replaced the standard issue chromed steel hoops on my 18x14 Sonor Phonic. The change in timbre was significant, with the maple hoops warming up and mellowing the sound. I've never gone back to the original metal.

Incidentally, all Sonor high end bass drums now come standard with wood hoops.

I have a 1969 Premier 'bop' set with a 12x18 mahogany w/beech re-rings b.d. and it puts out quite a powerful, yet warm, round sound. Toms are birch w/beech re-rings.

This is Bill Maley demonstrating them prior to my purchasing them from him 2 years ago

Ignore the nasal voiced moron who doesn't play too well, just admire the sound...;)[/QUOTE]

Gary!!! Great kit. Only you could acquire it for such a deal, including the 602's! I'm still jealous!

Attached are pictures of my Jet outfit. Like many of my kits, it was sold some time ago.

I acquired it as a 3pc, minus the snare drum. The Green Satin Flame finish (aquamarine) wasn't worth saving and I had the kit re-wrapped in vintage Sky Blue Pearl, with a matching snare drum. The Jet came with the original Buck Rogers snare stand, which I used for the snare drum. Installed was a MINT Setomatic holder, which was standard issue by the late 60's. I was fortunate to acquire the Snap-on pedal, but the COB batter hoop was missing the attaching mechanism. Through a series of lucky enquiries, I actually found the person who designed the mechanism for Slingerland and he sent me complete plans on the design. I had it made by a friend who owns a metal shop. That snap-on feature was very cool!

The bottom line is that I should have not installed the Setomatic, but continued to use the 8x12 on the stand. Live an learn! It was a great kit!

Gary!!

Looks like I've been keeping secrets from you! Yep, it was a beauty! The snare drum was built with a 5-ply Keller shell with 5-ply rings. A beautiful drum. The floor tom leg brackets were the push-button variety and worked quite well. I didn't appreciate my Jet at the time. Wish I could turn back the clock!

I cannot recall any issues re timbre the Jet's COB hoops, but in those days I often played with the front head off. I do think tuning seemed to take a little more finesse though.

I at one time, had a Pearl wood/fibreglass shell kit, the hollow metal hoops on the BD annoyingly "rang like bells". I replaced the hoops with an old set of Ludwig wooden hoops I had laying around , and it was a whole new drum.. no more ringing and, (as you say), "Warmed & Mellowed" the sound for sure..

I have avoided any metal hoops on a BD ever since.

Cheers
