Shouldn't there be a level above Guru? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

From Gilnar

It is true that there might be a special title for certain people, not necessarily based on the number of posts, just on the level of expertise. And I think THAT should be the guru title. I mean, I have "Vintage drum guru" written under my nickname, but that's just because I wrote a few hundred posts like "Oh, man, those Club dates look awesome!!!!!!1" or "Gee, I'd love to have a swimming pool filled with sparkling champagne and floating Zildjians carrying immense piles of potato fries." I don't feel like a guru. This title should be awarded personally by admins to people who've proven they know their drums. I'm sure everyone has a few names in his head.

I agree with you completely, sir but, we might even carry this honorary appellation a step further! Many wise and very intelligent men of the past, Including Einstein, Dickens, Will Rogers and Mark Twain realized that as we age and are exposed to more of the world, we are not quite as bright as we once suspected when youth was in our corner. Perhaps we should all start out as gurus! As we learn more and more, we could "progress" in a backward fashion until we were all just "Guys Who Love Old Drums". Just a thought.

Just a drummer who loves all things about vintage drums! Nothing more, nothing less.

I am happy with my title. I think it may be a PC way of calling me something else.

Don't worry..you will GROW out of it....

Ok not sure where to post this but I noticed there are guys on here that have over 5000 posts, but more importantly have tremendous expertise, on a variety of topics. I've learned a great deal from their posts. They should have some more advanced distinction. Like maybe drum deity or maybe there should an intermediate level like drum demigod, or maybe Drum Bishop and Drum Pope?

Well, definitely not Drum Pope, as we'd all have to convene in cloister to determine who's deserving, then burn a luan shell to signal to the drum world that we have a new leader. Guru is so appropriate as it conotates a teaching/instructive role, but the title cannot be bestowed upon us simply because we have accumulated 500 posts.

I say we get rid of the titles. We all know who the "go-to" guys are here, and who's an expert on which brand, and their wealth of knowledge is reflected in the quality of their posts, not the quantity. If the number of posts deserve any title, it should probably be this:

1-20 posts - Newbie

21-50 posts - Vintage Drum Fan

51-500 posts - Vintage Drum Enthusiast

501-1000 posts - Obsessed with vintage drums

1001-2000 posts - No life except vintage drums

2001-4000 posts - Live in my basement with my vintage drums

4001-5000 posts - Currently incarcerated and have nothing else to do

Mike!

FINALLY!... the voice of reason! You too GC Vintage.. because .. yes, the sheer number of posts has absolutely nothing to do with one's knowledge of vintage drums. The "software" happened to come with those titles, and they are indeed... stupid. David and I have always thought that too. Quite succinctly put mchair303! Now... maybe we can actually change said software to reflect your suggestions, and wouldn't that be grand!

Sure Tommy, you can appropriate my posting titles and I'll steal your avatar picture. Whoops, you lost your bass mic again! So how do the rest of us get avatar pictures?

Well, this proves the argument that number of posts does not a Guru make. I just noticed that I am now designated a Guru (500+ posts). What a joke! Although I own a vintage kit and several vintage snares I am certainly NOT a Guru. In spite of playing for about 50 years it's only in the past 3 years that I have become interested in drum (Ludwig) history. I have a couple of reference books, the catalog CDs and, most importantly, the knowledge of the true Gurus on this forum to learn from. Thanks.
