Trash Or Treasure Last viewed: 2 hours ago

"As I was out "treasure hunting" earlier today I happened to run across a 70s Slingerland kit in what appeared to be in some sort of solid "eggshell" wrap. The kit included a 24" bass drum, 13" & 14" toms on a separate Set-O-Matic stand"

I had this kit in the 80's but mine had a 16" floor tom instead of an 18". Mine was WMP faded to the darker greenish/yellowish hue with 13/14 toms on a separate Slingy stand with Setomatic holder. The kick was 24" and was a thundering herd of buffalo. The toms I wasn't crazy about but the kick and the snare were to die for. The snare was a 5x14 super sound kind with the parallel strainer and was crispy and delicious. Like apple smoked bacon on a cold, Sunday morning... The toms being mounted that way was weird because they were so big it was hard to mount both and play it comfortably for ME. I used it at school and we used it as a 4 piece in the 1987 Florida High School Jazz Band Competition in Tallahassee. It was recorded and that kit sounded good. I'd like to see the eggshell wrap you speak of.

I refer to it as "eggshell". In reality it's probably nothing more than a "dirty white."

After a little research I did discover that Slingerland listed a "white gloss pearl" in its 1976 catalog. Perhaps that's the finish on this kit which has simply "mellowed" through the years.

Well, I ended up picking them up. When I went to see if they were still available there were 4 individuals standing around the kit, taking pictures with their cellphones and calling their "buddies" to see if they'd have an interest. I decided to grab 'em. The sizes are 10x14 (SN 406251),

12x15 (403033), 16x18 (403037) and 14x24 (406216). The owner also threw in a 5x14 8-lug metal snare drum (non-American), two extremely heavy duty Slingerland cymbal stands with the largest looking "mickey mouse" ears that I've ever seen, a Slingerland Set-O-Matic dual tom stand, a Ludwig snare drum stand and two vintage Zildjian cymbals -- a 22" and an 18". All the drums as well as the stands need a serious cleaning and polishing. One of the legs on the tom stand has some sort of problem which I'll need to address as does one of the mounts on one of the rack toms. One of the four floor tom legs is also bent but still functional.

All I've had the time to do thus far is remove all the hardware from the toms and go over the shells with a damp rag. The real fun probably won't start until sometime next week. I'll see how successful I'll be at removing the scrapes, scratches and tape residue on the shells. Hopefully it'll go well.

I just thought that I'd post a few pics of the toms so that you could see the "eggshell" color I mentioned in my prior posts. The difference is apparent when comparing the area of the drums where the lugs were removed to the other areas on the shell.

Yes, that's gloss white. I have an orphan 9x13 tom lying around with that wrap. Not my favorite, but somebody will like them. Sounds like you got a great deal. You could probably get $200 just for the 2 cymbals.

I recently sold a similar kit, but this was one 3 ply.

Yeah, those do look great on stage. I think it's the scarf that makes the whole setup though.

I think its more the sunglasses but the scarf is an integral part of the set up haha
