Im 51... been playing most of my life. Orchestral and Fife & Drum during high school. Drumset at Berklee. Moved to Nashville in 1995. Worked as a touring drummer for a little over 10 years... most notably with the Dixie Chicks for 2 yrs (98-99). I still play/teach drums full time... don't really know how to do anything else! ... well actually I do, but this is more fun. Recently got bitten by the vintage bug... cant help but get interested when you teach at a small shop that restores drums. I play vintage drums 90% of the time now.two photos from my touring days... George Strait Festival 99. Ive been very fortunate and Im very thankful to have seen much of the world from behind a kit.

Too cool! Love the pic from behind, showing the masses. What bar is that? : )

> I went on to play in every type of band you can imagine from rock, pop, country, jazz (piano/drum duet, 4 piece combo, 18 piece big band) pretty much anything. Like Purdie, I was playing two to three nights a week by the age of 15 in night clubs, lodges, resorts, school dances, etc. In my spare time I developed a lighting rig that I rented out while playing gigs. I went on to Southeast Missouri State Univ and majored in music education meanwhile playing two to four nights a week in any type of group I could find.

Squint - Man, I would purely love to spend time with you just shooting the $hit! We have so much common history. You would have loved the New York scene in the 60's. I got to play a bunch of gigs in bars and clubs in Harlem and Sugar Hill with older cats (that were -decades- older than me.) One night I'd be backing a doo-wop singing group with just bass, drums and piano, working all night with just brushes, the next night might be a Go-Go bar/disco where I'd get to jam with a horn section, back up singers etc. and really lay into the drums, then the next gig might be at a raunchy Blues Bar on the Lower East Side where the smell of beer is so thick in the air, you can get bombed just breathing!. Man, I got to play so many different styles, it wasn't funny. It was a University level music education all packed into a couple of years. Most of the cats that really taught me "how to play" were much older, experienced musicians. Most them not even drummers. But they would coach me and give me advice, sometimes in between numbers, on what kind of sound they were looking for, what kind of 'feel' the tune had, or how they wanted me to play/handle a certain part/passage. I loved every minute of it. It gives you much confidence in -any- playing situation. Back then, just from the constant playing with all kinds of different people, different styles, there was nothing somebody could throw at me that I couldn't jump right into the 'right groove' for. Wish we lived closer, I'd love to do some serious jaw-flapping with you. We could talk about our mis-spent youth.... lol :p

I'll be 43 in November. I was kind of a late bloomer: I didn't really start learning how to play until I was 21.I'm pretty much self taught. I am a 4/4 surf beat drummer at heart; I'm not a technical drummer, and playing with understated simplicity has served me well over the years. My body has started to break down a bit (I currently have not one by TWO bulging discs in my neck), and I can't play really fast punk like I used to. But despite my physical issues I can still play a bit, and I'm still having fun with it.

I'm 27 and I started at 17; Self-taught and learned from listening to Dennis Wilson and Hal Blaine on Beach Boys records, also a lot of Marky Ramone. Always stuck with surf drumming, punk rock and pre-hippie rockNroll-

I'm a 80 year old man trapped in a 31 year old body

I'm a 65 year old man trapped in a 27 year old body; I hate everything about living in this era- the music, the technology, etc.

I call it being perceptive.

While there is a lot to not like about some of today's music, there is also some creative stuff still being produced. As to technology, there is something to be said about the issues of our current usage, (who is the comedian who said "we have the greatest technology wasted on the crappiest generation") however, without it, this conversation wouldn't exist.

Besides in the 70's we had disco.

At 19 years of age I might easily be one of the very few youngest here. Joined this forum when I was about 16 and learned a whole lot from you guys.

Thanks for showing me the wonderful world of vintage drums!
