My old man was a rowdy, drunken, union heavy highway construction worker that played drums for a local band called the Junkyard Dogs. The band was more of an "ensemble" cast of characters with the singers wife playing bass, the neighbor showing up with a fiddle every so often, etc.....LoLoLoLo My mother told me he bought the red tiger pearl Slingy kit that I now assault, in lieu of the washing machine she wanted/needed.......

When we were very young, my brother and I could unpack his kit, when it came back home, and set it up in like a couple minutes. We were like the kids on Six Pack, the Kenny Rogers movie..... The old man didn't believe in the "time-out" mantra of today, so I am sure we has some extra "incentive" to get that thing up and ready for him to blast away on until he passed out...LoLoLoLo

Anyways, I came across this kit up in his attic while cleaning out his house when he passed, and I brought her home and set it up. I started banging on it, joined a couple forums, got kicked off of all of them but this one, and started getting info. I tore it down, cleaned it up to a 9 out of ten, then started adding stuff to more accurately represent someone from the best era of music. I decided to shelve this Slingy kit and pick up something more suitable for me to learn on, so Latzy sent me another pic of him in the shower, and also sold me a set of HB bags at a price you wouldnt' believe!

The pleather bags the kit came in had mold in them out in the garage so straight to the burn pile with those.

I picked up a Custom Classic hybrid kit, surrounded it with a rack, added 5 roto toms, and about 100 pounds of cymbals, and now have something I can hammer away at and really not care that much about. Rogersling gave me a KILLER 15" Slingy snare and that is now the new biggest thing ever between my legs LoLoLoLo

Never had a lesson, never joined band, never gigged, never actually played along with another musician yet (that fell through this summer) etc. I bought a practice pad and take that on the road when I am working to try and get my left hand halfways caught up to my right. I can also do a nice horrible sounding studder blast beat on the double kick pedals now too. It is about 1 1/2 to 1 ratio from right to left foot.....Eye Ball I have no technique, probably don't do a lot of things "right", so I compensate by telling my wife and kids that how I am doing it is the right way, and have my IPOD set high enough so that I can't hear my playing all that well. No shame here!Cool1

After college I went out on the road as drummer and musical director for Dan Peek who was one of the members of the band America.

I love the Electrovoice album. Was that you playing on it?

By the way, as to the handle tnsquint; 'TN' is for Tennessee and 'squint' is a road nickname for any lighting technician.

Thanks for clearing that up! Wish I would have made up a drum related username. I thought I would just use this forum for few days to get my project going. Thanks for making me feel welcome, now I have 10 drum sets, all vintage. Love buying but hate selling.

You guys make cabinet building seem boring.

Keep em coming!

Roger, that was actually Dan 'playing' his Linn Drum machine. One of his little tricks was to record a bar of fill and then put the crash on "4" or the "and of 4" so that he didn't have to record an extra bar with a crash on "1". That drove me nuts! Needless to say I didn't play it that way live.

He was a great guy. It was sad when he passed last year.

Thanks.

Yes, I appreciated Scott explaining his "handle," and think it's great.

But, Jeff, your's is pretty cool, too... and helps indentify you and what you do.

Now, mine is really quite simple. The "bill" is me, the "vick" is my wife (short for Vicky). We registered that username with eBay back in the late 1990s. Just never changed it to anything else; you know how that goes. When I signed up here, since I was already selling vintage drums and parts on eBay it just seemed logical to use it here...

In 49 years I have been blessed to do a lot of really cool things, and working on his tours for a couple of years was certainly something that was memorable. We played all of his solo stuff as well as the major tunes from the America catalog. I especially enjoyed playing and singing "Tin Man". That relaxed eighth note pattern with the triangle (or finger cymbal) accent was seriously cool. I used a small Paiste Cup Chime on my left to accomplish that live. As I recall we opted to do "Horse with No Name" with a one drop reggae feel. In retrospect, I probably should have just done that with hand percussion. Ahh youth.
