vintage thrones? Last viewed: 3 minutes ago

Those are called canister Thrones. You could get a keller shell and wrap it. I see them on ebay all the time. Then you could cut out 2 pieces of 3/4" plywood the would fit snuggly into the shell. Fit one into the bottom of the shell and attach the other to the seat and set that on top of the shell. You could even cover the bare plywood with felt for aesthetic reasons, but you have to allow for the thickness of the felt on the fit, or just paint it black. If you covered the bottom in felt it would peel back sooner or later.

Yeah... canister thrones.

I'd probably also stick some adjustable feet on the bottom to level it on uneven stages. I run into those from time to time. Like the feet on the bottom of appliances like washers/dryers and refrigerators.

Current gigging set:
Recent Ludwig Accent 13/16/18/26, (in Silver Sparkle), "updated" 70's Acrolite with cast batter hoop and Trick strainer/butt

Cymbals:
Zildjian K Custom Ride, Dream (Bliss and Contact) crashes and hats, and a Sabian Swish/China.

Other stuff:
60's Ludwig Champagne Sparkle "Traveler's Club Date", under construction. Click Here
70's Acrolite (under RE-construction)
Two 1960's mahogany 32" Ludwig bass drums with Imperial lugs.

Interesting throne there mcjnic, I like the gas release cut-out !!

I'm a fat Italian drummer who has aged like a good Piacentinu di Enna. It's somewhat necessary these days.

My decidedly vintage ass does not sit anywhere near comfortable on vintage thrones; most of them are like balancing on a ledge. Roc and Soc is sublime; wish airline seats were as comfortable as one of those!

I have a 70's Slingerland throne that is very nice except for the foam. It's not broken down, just too soft so your butt feels the wood. Thinking about recovering it, but I already have others to use.

You can just replace the foam with some good high density foam.

Informative and enlightening posts from all - thank you! Sometimes I'm surprised drummers didn't just give up considering what we've had to sit on over the years!

I was watching a friend of mine play a cool Fibes set one day when the tube in the cheap import throne broke through the seat. . .

Yes, that's one way to break up a tempo! ;)
