Nice work latz! Is that Zebrawood? CocoboloHow much work goes into a stave shell? Lots I imagine.

Thanks.. Zebrawood and its considered a segment shell. Stave shells are like wine barrels. As you can see the grain on this is horizontal..

Thanks again..

I want to apologize if I've seemed a bit testy lately on some of my reply's or threads. Going thru some domestic issues & I may have transfered some aggression towards people who don't deserve it...but enough of that crap.

After thinking about this, I really don't care what I'm called...builder or assembler, it doesn't really matter to me or my customers. In my mind, an assembler is someone who orders a screw together "snare drum kit" from an online merchant. In the minds of someone like the guys that I buy shells from (who also build drums) I'm a drum assembler because I don't actually manufacture the actual shells. I guess it comes down to what angle you're looking at it from.

Being a Graphic Artist, I build/assemble these drums in my head long before ever ordering parts. Each shell has its own characteristics & I study them for a long time before deciding the look for that particular drum. In the case of the Bocote I built for Nick he had a different vision of the drum than I did, but after finishing her up, I was like DAMN!...he was right! I guess that makes fungus & musicaldeath Co-Assemblers! LOL!

As I said, this comes down to perspective!...to some people I'm an assembler, to others, I'm a builder...to me, I'm an Artist producing bada$$ drums that my customers love! From now on I'll just be a Drum Artist...now that will really screw with peoples heads! LOL!

Again, sorry guys if I've been an A$$hole of late!...and no Tommy didn't make me say this because I was in deep doo-doo. Just realized I was carrying some chips around on the old shoulder & wanted to clear the air.

Peace Out!

Dan

Did you stack blocks and turn that or is it layered veneer ?

Whatever, it`s a very classy look`n drum.

One day I`ll design a drum and build it from scratch,..but swamp and banks logs are expensive, especially if it`s been underwater for a hundred or more years !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Some of us are still not privy to the garbage you dish out with your buds from the other forum. That's pretty much the only one's who trust one word you type. Many of us still can't take you at your word. You and Bunny/Stu and the rest are who you are. Making snares doesn't remove the veil you've hung. You speak "crap" because that's always been your intent on this forum. Taking a momentarily civil tone as a drum maker guy does not allow us to just forget all the stuff you put into play and supported. It isn't that simple.

Lots of bad people have manufactured ok products. That doesn't excuse them.

Damn man, you truly have some anger issues! I have never attacked or said anything derogatory about anyone EVER on this site...EVER! I give my opinions & they are my opinions & I support the members that I think deserve supporting. But that is me, my opinions & my thoughts. If you don't like what I have to say, there is a little option in the user preferences section that say's "buddy list/Ignore"...Ignore me! I did it to you!...by the way, that was a shot.

Bunnyman & I are friends...sorry, get over it. Not sure what the issue is with all you guys, don't really care...we're the comic relief from some of the dust covered threads on this site. My work (both building drums and in restorations) & advice is completely different, it is backed by 45 years of knowledge & experience.

Actually thinking of starting a "Snare Drum Tour" here. That means, I get guys to sign up for the tour...I ship them one of my drums & they play it for a month and then ship it to the next guy on the list. I have 2 prototypes that I've been tinkering with, doing a little re-work to that I'll gladly send to an "Impartial Jury" of members & let them be the judge. They can then post their reviews on the site. Think this is called "putting my money where my mouth is". The only person that has anything to lose is me, but these are not my $1,000 snares. They're prototypes & ply shell snares, these are the drums that I send to guys to check-out before a real build. You guys let me know if you'd be in for that or not...is this a Gauntlet?...oh hell yeah!

...and Rog, get some Valium or some of those little blue pills! Chill Dude!...it's a wesite not the FBI's task force...this is supposed to be fun buddy.

If a man living in a little stone cottage in the depths of the Black Forest is able to forge all his own metal parts and cut down all the lumber and process it into the finest wooden shells and spend hundreds of hours completing the job to absolute perfection, then what should he be called?

If a man grabs a handful of lugs from a bin of lugs that have all been designed and built by the company he works for and affixes them to some shells that he takes from a shelf of shells that the company he works for has designed and made...and so on...and he ends up with a drum set that follows the patterns set forth by that company, then what should he be called?

What about the guy who outsources work to other companies to make components exclusively for him and according to his specs and has them shipped in where he then puts them together? What's he called?

And what about the guy who looks in catalogs and orders a bunch of generic parts fabricated at other factories and then amasses them into his own "mixture" and ends up with a drum set....What should he be called?

There is no anger here. Just a knowlege of the truth. You are a flat out liar. If you would like a full transcript of the garbage you and your buds spewed about the members on this forum, that can be arranged and posted. Do not even begin to go down the innocent road with us.

"What a bunch of pompous *******s...these were the same *******s that were offended because I used the term "hooker" in a post.

Guess it's time to get my ass thrown off another site. I'd like to get suggestions from all you guys on what would be the most insulting post I could make to get my ass thrown off...I want to go down in a flame of glory, so make it good! I know that we have the talent here to **** off an entire country, much less a bunch of old dust sniffers (like me)...I want to hear your best shots!"

Ring a bell? There's more, if you'd like to read it. You and Bunny/Stu, JRichard, etc. Don't pretend you are innocent and buddy buddy. You and the schmucks have started down a path that is very contrary to respect and admiration. Sorry, but I call 'em like I see 'em. You are a liar.

I can't recall where I read it,but some claimed that Stratavarius, created the stain he used on his violins, with his own blood.I don't know how true that is,but talk about putting yourself into your work.

I think if somone is going that far as to use only raw materials, that were harvested only by them, then the process is creation, and the creator,an artist. But the word artist also has many conotations.

If the artist is a painter, did he mix his own paints? How adout make his own brushes, knives and canvas? Is a graphic artist, not an artist because because he doesn't use a canvas and an easile?

How about this. There is more art in some instruments, that others. So then all things being equal, the more art and skill involved in the creation of that instrument, has a direct bearing on its value as a piece of art,and not JUST an instrument.IMHO,Lantanimals segmented snare drum, falls into that catagory.

That piece wasn't simply just put together like a model kit.Forethought and creativity were also involved in a greater, not lesser degree,in that drums creation. And how about sound?I've seen beautiful looking instruments, that quite simply sounded like crapola.

I think in the end,all aspects of creating these instruments, has to be considered, when seperating the wheat, from the chaff. It just may come down to personal opinion, and not something thats quantifiable :2Cents:

Creation is creation, people do it for different reasons. I started building because I could no longer play due to physical issues & also because I wanted a 14" floor for my Gretsch kit & didn't want to pay the price. People do it for different reasons, but it's fun & supports itself if you do it right. I started working on antique furniture with my folks when I was a kid & like the look of hand rubbed wood, that's why I do what I do. It doesn't take a Rocket Scientist to do this...I will gladly tell anyone what the process is...have posted it several times on GhostNote. It just take patients & love of what you're doing...you also have to mix some imagination in there. The bottom line is knowledge of the instrument & what makes them sing. I've been restoring drums, guitars & furniture for more years then I'd like to count & it's much easier doing that then it is creating your own identity as a creator of instruments. Not diss'n anyone because I've got a loft full of Vintage stuff in line for resto...just saying they are different.
