Whats your favorite Drum Configuration? Last viewed: 48 seconds ago

I have 6 kits, but I could easily work with only two: My 1971 Slingerland Modern Solo 2R... 14x22, 8x12, 9x13, 16x16 and the 5x14 COB Krupa... or my 1966-67 Rogers Headliner, 14x20, 8x12, 16x16 with my choice of a matching 5" Powertone, 5" COB Powertone and a 1966 7-line 5" COB Dynasonic. Between those two kits and snare drums, I can pretty much handle all the music that interests me!

Don't quite get what the poll is asking. I fluctuate in sizes depending on what i playing and where BUT I voted traditional because my favourite kit style is one up and one down, although in one of my bands I do play 2 down because the Tom fills that are written go that way!

I play Jazz with 20 12 14 Downbeat.

I recently recorded with 24 14 18 on my Big R's, that sounded PHAT!

I'm currently digging the "Charlie Watts" 22 12 16 on my 70's Gretsch's in my practice room.

I tour with 24 13 16ft 18ft

And I tend to use 13 16 22 when not playing Jazz(well sometimes) or touring.

I have too many Drums I guess.

The purpose of this poll is to see what configuration most drummers like to play. It will help me decide what drum kit to set up at my JamHole. It will be the house drums with a supra snare. When we have a live band play the drums will be provided. All he will need is his sticks and cymbals. Ill have cymbals on hand but they wont be my favorites. Ive had them broke before and thats not a pretty sight. Of course if they want thier pedal or snare thats fine too.

Thanks for the input so far guys...

You can't go wrong with 22, 12, 16ft. Maybe a 20" BD on hand in the corner for smaller players who like to keep it tight. But tbh the 12"x8 should be easy enough to get down low. Keep it simple, keep it easy to maintain.

Poppy, what is the style of music involved for what you all are doing? This will help us provide better input to help you out.

Well that's a tough question! It all depends on the gig and type of music. I play several configurations - Jazz, Fusion, Bonham-ish, Traditional because I play with a jazz quartet, a Blues trio, classic rock band - and a fusion/funk band - so I picked a fusion 20 because it's somewhere in the middle smaller bass and toms for jazz but maybe big enough for blues and rock.

I posted a bit ago but it apparently did not show up. My apologies if I have two similar posts.

Speaking not from any personal preference, I can tell you the defacto standard backline rental kit for "run and gun" festivals (everyone shares a kit) in the rock, pop, country or similar genres would be a 22-10-12-14-16. The 14 and 16 would be floor toms with legs. Drummers choose which toms they want to use with 12-16 or 12-14-16 as the most popular configurations. Regardless you can do a 1 up and 1 down, 2 up and 1 down, 1 up and 2 down, and of course, a 2 up and 2 down configuration.

You might opt for a 13 instead of a 10. A 22" is a versatile bass drum that will cover almost anything except the be-bop stuff. If you actually expected some light combo jazz then perhaps a 20" would be in order. You can still rock on a 20" but it is tough to be-bop authentically on a 22". To be honest, there are a lot of drummers that will struggle with 24" or larger kicks. I have found that drummers that play larger drums will acclimate a lot quicker to smaller kits than the other way around.

Keep a few snares available. In a perfect world a 5/5.5 and a 6.5 in both metal and wood. Of course, a Supra is a nice Swiss Army knife. Also a double pedal is a good idea. (Sorry Mike T). In these situations you have to be able to set up and run quickly. To that point, you want to consider your tom mounting hardware as it may be adjusted or completely re-worked multiple times a night, a task that a lot of vintage hardware is not at all up to.

By the way, for those of you who might be OCD like me, you might be cringing at the thought of moving mounted toms from left to right with regards to the placement of head logos. Instead of orienting the head logo to the badge, I align it with the tom mount. While the logos may be crooked, they will always be crooked symetrical and at least they never end up upside down.

The older I get the less drums I need. Any more, I either use a 14 X 20 or 22 bass (depending on the venue) and a 13 rack and 16 floor. And whatever snare suits my fancy for the evening. I have various kits with the same wrap that will fit those configurations, so it's pretty easy.

Once every couple of years we'll play somewhere I can use the Camco. I don't take the 13 rack with it, and play it as: 14 X 24, 14 rack, 16 and 18 floor toms. However, the next time I pull the Camco out, I'll bet I take the 13 and 16 along with the 24 bass and leave the rest home.

Oh yeah, I've gotten down to where I only use a 20 or 22 inch ride, a 16 or 17 crash and 14 inch hats. Four cymbals total, and I've got bags full of good ones.

Yep, I'm lazy...

For the jamhole, I'm leaning toward a pearl icon drum rack with 8-10-12-13-14-15-16-18-22-with a 24 on the side for anyone that wants a larger kick and maybe have a 20 in the closet,
