I know, it's a depressing thought, but one that should be discussed with your family. Everytime I go in my basement and look under my bing pong table, and see my original WMP 70's Sling kit (which 75% of it was bought new in 69 at the Niles plant when I was 19 by the way) I wonder what will happen to it when I'm gone. I expect many of us vintage drummers, are also vintage in age. know if I died tommorrow, my wife would most likely put my kits on the curb for garbage day, as she is clueless and could care less about drums. I have a 21 year old that uses my roland kit on occassion, I was thinking I may one day sit down and educate him on my drums, in hope he may take them in and understand the value of these drums. I know my collection pales in comparision to 95% of the poeple here, so I wondered what steps if any you have taken to ensure your drums will be passed on to a relative, if you don't address it sooner rather than later, they may end up in the street one day also, which will most likely make some garage collector quite happy. LOL.....

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
My 40+ year old kids are already harping at me to catalog and price my drums so that they can sell them as soon as I'm dead. I'm dragging my feet just to frustrate them. :)
I don't know if I'm, "Of vintage age" (I'm 40) but I was just talking/joking about this recently.
Who gets my drums?
Whoever finds the body I suppose.
I was also picturing someone (I have no kids and don't plan to...so who knows who it would be) half wondering, "What is all this junk?" as they are tossing it in the dumpster.
Oh!
Gerald, I'm not passing judgement on your kids by ANY means....but it sounds like you should sell the stuff before they get the chance!

it is already set up that all my musical instruments and music stuff go to my oldest grandson jude and all my guns and hunting stuff go to my youngest grandson ryan, if they want to trade between themselves then that is fine too.
kinda kidding here but also kinda serious. if any of you don't have someone to leave your collection to....i would be honnored to inherit them. i would love and respect them fully and you would never have to worry if they were being miss treated or ending up on the curb, i respest all instrments way too much to ever let that happen. oh and so does my family, we all love everything music.

My daughter, my oldest child, is the designated, 'executor of my estate' after I'm gone. I told my daughter to offer the kits to my grandchildren first, if they don't want them, she is to convert the drums into cash and divide the proceeds as I have designated in advance.
Get a Will, boys! You don't have to leave things to the Fates. A Will allows you to have some say in what happens with $ and personal property after you have departed from this mortal coil. Work it out with trusted family members.
I don't think that any of us are going to be at all concerned with drums after we kick the bucket... take care of it beforehand - leave a Will behind.

I'm only 33, but if I *were* to die tonight, my wife knows a few of my friends who would help her sell off my instruments. My kids would get to pick through, and then the rest of my meager collection would be on craigslist.

My daughters don't play.....other than one of them does use the Djembe I bought her for Christmas a few years ago. They are adults now...I have pressed them for years to learn to play. They have no interest other than they think it would be very cool to inherit my drums when I die. I told them if anyone gets the drums it's their cousin...in his 20's ....he plays drums in a band and is doing well with it. So...if my daughters do not learn to play or take an interest in drumming they're going to lose out big time. I feel good about selling some of my collection off....to avoid some of it going to the $5 sale as has been mentioned above. My collection pales in comparison to most here but I do have a dozen or so snare drums with 5 complete drum kits and a bunch of orphan toms. I'm sure the nephew can't use it all. My wife has told me to document everything...which I have....in case I do die so she will have at least some idea of what I have. She told me she doesn't want to sell a drum that's worth $1000 for $50 (My LangPercussion for instance)....thoughtful of her.
Good thread - gets one thinking........
If my snare drums etc. outlive me then my wife and daughter know who to call and I told them that it's fine with me to sell everything and take the money and run...You don't see luggage on a hearse!

That's easy everything I own goes to my one and only child. My Daughter. She knows that some of it is worth some pretty good cash but I'm going to catalog it.
