Why so few toms? Last viewed: 2 hours ago

Kinda' depends on the music, no? You can't do Rush covers on a 4 piece, can you (though, it would be a fun challenge)? Been reliving my youth the last few days, listening to some old Iron Maiden. Even those tunes have more drum sounds than a 4 or 5 piece can offer. I don't know if I'm helping.

I'd like the option of a slightly bigger kit, but I'll be happy finding the elusive mid-70's Gretsch 8x12 walnut tom, to complete my 2 up and over, two down kit. I think big kits are still a "Thing", just not like it used to be. Like concert toms, they fell out of flavor. I don't think there's any true theory as to why the big kits became fewer.

Interesting question and comments here. That said, girls like drummers?

You could look at it the other way and say some drummers wont know how to use four toms. I think that limited options makes most drummers sound the same through all the songs. I`ve always said,..it`s hard to play a drum you don`t have !i

Good point...

But..my friend doesn't know the word Groove I don't think...he just likes to flail around his 4 toms....

If ya can't make it groove on a 4 pc, then ya won't on 10.

with less toms you have to be more rhythmic creative.

You gonna tell Bonham he needs more toms??

Besides, most clubs have small stages and the guitar and bass player ***** incessantly if you force them onto the dance floor with your immense kit(that's why you rarely see 2 bass drums.)

p.s. it's not the drums that gets girls, it's the hair. lol.

Prove it! Show us photos on women gathered around a multi-tom kit giggling and having fun. I don't believe it :)

That`s why you can tell Bonham as soon as you hear it, except in one note, pure and easy, playing so free like a breath rippling by !i

If I were gonna play in the groove useing the 12,13 and 16 then wind down a set with a ballard or two, I`d prolly use the 15 and 16 with the 18 to carry notes instead of fill in.

Did that make sence ?

As was said before I think it depends on the music.

I also believe a lot of non-musicians hear what they see.

I'm more of a funky- rock drummer. I play one up two down most of the time,

My brother is more rock-metal,( three up two down).

I play bass guitar and he plays drums in our "thrash/heavy metal" band. We both have long hair, wear worn out denim and old tour shirts. When he brings a double bass kit people actually comment more about his playing.

Same set list, venues ect. Add one more bass drum and all of the sudden he's frickin' Neil Peart.
