Great drummers are still out there, the problem is over-saturation of bad to mediocre players that have "the look"...the old saying "if it smells it sells" is still true. In my opinion Gavin Harrison is the cream of the crop from the present generation. He's tasteful, musical, plays with incredible dynamics, can read his a$$ off, and best of all, the guy is very humble.I too am a groove/pocket drummer, but prefer not to diminish this skill in the category of "just a..."! Our primary job as drummers is to make all of the collective nitwits around us sound like a band & groove drummers do this the best...it is being selfishly unselfish. By listening & making everyone else sound better, we make the band sound better & thus make ourselves sound better. I call it "the meat behind the beat"...just my 2 cents.

I told the last two bands I auditioned for that if they wanted Neil Peart, I aint their bloke!!!! You couldn't PAY me to over play like that. That crap is an aural assault on the ears; DRUMS ARE NOT A SOLO INSTRUMENT!!!

If you don't like this opinion- STUFF IT!!!! I am sick and tired of unsolicited negative opinions!!!!

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

Bunny - First... I'm going to send a really good herbal tea. No caffeine! LOL

And... I'll give you a 'positive' opinion to your comment that; 'drums are not a solo instrument.' Allow me to introduce you to one of my all time hero's. And through him, allow me to introduce you to the 'art' of the drum solo.

I can listen to this stuff all night long! It really depends on 'who' is playing the solo.

Peace...

John

Too many great drums to list here!

We used to put our own music onto sheets and came together in a home built studio all in the same room to put it together so to speak(old days). Some of our best music came from jamming at this studio.

When we needed to learn covers we got the music & vinyls to take home to learn, then back together again to put the song together, again in the old days. It worked pretty good for years.

When I practiced at home on covers (1960s) I had two turntables, one belt driven and one geared and sitting on foam so they would not skipp. I had the belt driven slowed down somewhat so I could learn the licks the drummer was doing. I had the music in front of me and used the spare turntable at regular speeds for the feeling I would get from the grooves of the song. Worked for me.

I had taken a long break when CDs came on scene and when I begin playing again it was completely different in the studios. But that worked also although really Impersonal and I really didn,t enjoy the music that much. Some studios even had TVs in the seperate rooms I guess to keep things together when laying things down. It was still really impersonal.

I am surely glad I got to experience the changes in the music industry though. I still like drummers that keep really good time and thats what I strived for. No flashy extreme drumming.

Someone mentioned Gaven Harrison, I really like his style although a lot of people misunderstand that style. I also saw Royce(I believe thats a part of his name) on Letterman and he did a great job doing Caravan, a song we were always asked to do, I really liked how he rebirthed that instrumental into the modern world. Sorry- still stinging from the other day.

Really 80's Hair Metal? The best thing about the 80's music is that the 90's started.

Thank God someone posted that before i got the chance the best thing about 80's hair music is that is is gone!

There are several reasons why todays drummers are so digitalized... one is that there is no good music of this era to emulate for up and comers like there was for us in the 50 and over crowd, pocket drummers? lol that is what the music of our day was we sat for hours and weeks with a 45rpm record player learning gig songs , Gloria, midnite hour, tobbaco road, louie louie, then came hendrix and Cream and many others and music exploded into many many fractions and drummers of the day chose their path.. Drums not a solo instrument? Ok that is your opinion BUT if you can not see the beauty of a solo by Ginger Baker,John Bonham,Cozy Powell,Mitch mitchell, Corky Lang, and many others than to me you are looking through tunnel vision when it comes to the drums.... I am of Native American desent the FIRST instrament in the world was a drum and I can assure you that it can be played solo and will fill your heart with passion and life.... todays kids are doing what their generation is doing just as we did do I care for it Nope, I am not a fan of Joe Morello, or many others from the swing era but they were still awesome drummers just different from the path I chose it is all good and Different.

I disagree on the 80's music point and offer that the 70 million people who bought and paid for Appetite for Destruction can't all be wrong.Cool1

have a wonderful evening

i was trying some complex rolls the other day just for shape i cant believe how slow i got man i use to be fast what i use to do on one pedal (ghost) others couldn't do on 2 . don't get me wrong im not dead yet i can still throw down but i see the difference from a full time drummer and a has been, man the good ol days the drum solos hard paced complicated songs, cream, Hendrix, sabbath, steppenwolf, stones, deep purple, pink floyd, when you know 140 or so songs you really dont forget them, i believe a good ear player can get by if he knows the song lets face it a lot of here cant read and most that can have to break it down and learn it kudos to the instant reader here!

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
