Makes me glad that I'm not into oyster blue pearl or any other finish for that matter. Just give me a drum that sounds good. I could give a **** about brand or color.

From LudwigDrummer

I use my Ludwig oyster blue drum kit for all of myphoto shoots and studio recordings. I don't use them for live performances, however,an appearance on Late Night With David Letterman(for example) might be a case where I would consider using my 1960s oyster blues for a live performance.... ... Although, I did have a "replica" kit made (of my oysterblues) for travel and live shows. It was made special forthat reason back in 2003. Ludwig and The Lawton DrumCompany teamed up to make me a kit that looked prettyclose to my original 1960s oyster blues. I use that kit for liveshows. Yes, my 1960s oyster blue drums get played and recorded all the time. It's main use is in the studio. There will be a song coming out in the next year thatyou may hear everywhere around the globe. I'm currentlyusing my Ludwig oyster blues on the recording. It's abig name artist and I'm not permitted to talk about itat this time, but, I will be able to share that informationat a later time.

LudwigDrummer:

Thanks for taking the time to provide all the background information regarding your kit. Very kind of you!

This is what I've been saying for years, though. It's NOT always about how a drum sounds or its utilitarian usefulness. It's very often about how it LOOKS. There are musicians. There are collectors. There are musician/collectors. There are historians. There are people who want to put things under glass and preserve them forever (seemingly). There are people who want an era-specific prop for a movie. And with each of those categories, there are all kinds of budgets for things.

Anecdote: If you watch the Austin Powers movies, his band (Ming Tea)'s drummer, is playing an Arbiter Autotune kit. The problem with that is, the Arbiter kit wasn't made until 1975. But, so what? They needed a more "groovy (baby!)"-LOOKING kit. What could be more groovy-looking than an Arbiter Autotune, after all? ;)

People connect to their favorite shiny objects in all kinds of ways. When it comes to vintage drums, some people love the sound and don't care if the drums are mismatched, different colors, unconventional sized configurations, etc. But, there are many people who couldn't tell you the difference between paradiddles and pairs of fiddles, who will shell out all kinds of moolah for a drum that looks right to them. That's because, as humans, we tap into the world with ALL our senses -hearing, seeing, touching...tast...well...maybe not tasting! :D But you see what I mean.

Beautiful snare drums!

LuwigDrummer.

Thanks for posting the pics. I can see what you mean about the wrap. While the pattern appears random, the linear look and feel is there on your toms staying within a perceived plane, where the 3k snare pattern moves up/down from the linear plane. I would not have seen it without having read your description. Your attention to detail is also on another plane. I can't say that variance in the pattern would be an issue for me, but I can appreciate what you want to acomplish here. Perfection is a work in progress.

ludwigdrummer i know the feeling when i bought my holly wood in champagne sparkle ,good for you sometimes the sentiment means more than the money God bless u i got my set and flipped out (to the good ) it came with a 65 jazz fest snare so i would rather have 400 as thats what came with my first set but im liking the jazz fest more and more, enjoy life its to short for bs and what give anyone the right to judge ones action we are born here in the greatest country in the world and because of our ancestors we have vintage drums that are holding up to the test of time and because of that so we battle over a drum, a kit, a cymbal, win some lose some thats the American way, may the best man win..............

soon barret jackson will have vintage drums next to there hemi cudas hey do i hear 99,000 going once twice sold AmericanWalking
