$60 Yard Sale Find --from this morning! Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Loading...

I just wanted to share my yard sale find from this morning. I spent around $60 and got an old Ludwig snare drum with original calfskin heads. Completely playable -- the bottom head is almost mint! I also got a huge Ludwig kick drum with strange Ludwig pedal. Plus a box of antique Ludwig small hardware and percussion pieces (castenets, triangle, etc -- all Ludwig and L&L). On top of that I also got a xylophone that belonged to the same cat. It's a JC Deagen.

Any info on any of these pieces would be greatly appreciated!!!! Does anyone know what that saw-tooth hardware piece is? Or that pair of leather tips? How about that weight on the kick pedal beater?

Thanks!

Where do you people live at?? Ok here is the skinny The snare is hard to see, but looks to be a 4" universal brass snare drum it looks to be a 30's model, the bass drum pedal is a ludwig one-piece footbard bass drum pedal made between 1923-1941 with the metal cymbal striker, and original bass drum beater, I can't see the bass drum well enough!! but yeah your $60.00 dollars has netted you a nice find Indeed!!Jumping2

Thanks for the quick replies and info. I haven't measured anything yet (just got up from a nap) -- but v-more2000 I think you're right -- the snare has 4" depth. I just can't get over the bottom calf heads!

"Cymbal striker?" -- I thought that piece on the beater was an adjustable-height weight, for changing the feel/action.

I'm outside Atlantic City.

Any idea what those two leather tips are in the last photo?

The kick drum has this paper label inside:

I also got this wood xylophone in the deal:

The xylo is missing its legs, and needs to be re-strung. But the wood is in great shape and sounds in perfect tune. I'm psyched!!

the xylophone is really nice, yeah the cymbal striker will swing out and was operated with your foot, so you could add the cymbal effect with on and off, the usually cymbal was 7-11" mounted to the inside of the back bass drum rim! your bass drum is a real ludwig ludwig, is it brown under the dirt? I hope you use this, and if not you can list it here in the for sale section, but I hope you keep it, you can't believe what that bass drum sounds like with modern plastic heads!! but you won't believe how good it sounds with your calf heads, if you are a musician you can go around to schools and demonstrate this vintage equipment for music and history classes etc!!

vmore2000 - I think you're right on again -- this kick drum would sound awesome with replacement heads. I just measured it -- 28" holy cow! I bet 28" heads cost a small fortune. Too bad the orig heads are so torn up.

It looks like it's still in-round. And it is a deep brown under the layer of dust and grime. I want to clean it right now, but I don't have the energy. Gettin' old and working too hard all week.

I just play for enjoyment these day on a Roland digital kit in my headphones. But I've just recently been thinking of getting a wood kit - but not one this old. I'm not so sure I could just let go and play on such an old kit for fear of damaging it. But there is that school of thought that says using an item for its intended purpose helps to preserve it.

Would you play these drums? Or are they too old, and have earned a quite retirement ?

No you would be stunned how great this kit is, 28" bass drums are some of my favorites, you can look around music store in your area for these heads sometimes you can get them cheap! but yes new ordered will be around 50,00 each head, did you get the bass drum clamp om spurs, you'll need those! and just because the thumscrew on the bass seem flimsy they aren't, and the snare drum is going to blow you away!! put remo ambassador heads top and bottom, metal snare wires, man you have a real keeper!

Farnes - Nice stuff! If you’d like to narrow the dating on that snare, visit the thread below and see if you can get a match. You have a model that has the P-338 strainer, so you should be able to determine its date pretty close at this link.
