I can totally relate to the posters dilemna! (excpet i'm not married nor have children or a mortage).I've been playing drums on&off for over 30+ yrs! :),BUT have NEVER played professionally(unless you count playing in blues club jam nights as being a "professional" these weren't paying gigs).Anxiety&depression &ocd(obsessive compulsive disorder) have seen me both lose&spend thousands on drums&cymbals heads&sticks.Even though my mother took me to lessons BOTH parent NEVER encouraged me as far as wanting to make a living out of it(being a "professional" drummer/musician).I've also been bullied(cyber bullying) on a website that has muscians available&wanted to the point where i had to change my user name. One poster even went as far as placing a drummer wanted ad in my area only to find out that the ad was bogus&he (poster) was attempting &tyrying to bait me i've also been threatened on that site! :(.My depression got so bad that i burnt rare drum posters&threw out 300 + photos of my favourite drummer.I also STOPPED listening to ANY music that had drums in it.THEN around 6.5 yrs ago i got inspired watching a rockabilly drummer &bought myself a kit&have NEVER looked back!,(i've actually got my DREAM lUDWIG "Bonham/Zepp" kit&cymbals) ! :).SO NEVER give up! :)!.

don't quit.

Playing any instrument is a path, not a destination.

You NEVER stop learning and growing.

Enjoy the ride.

I've had to go electronic with mesh heads in order to really learn with wild abandon.

Once I'm better, the acoustic heads go back on and it's time to add dynamic control to my technique and anger the neighbors but for now.....the repetition of mistakes that constitutes my learning is better heard by me alone.

If you find yourself being timid or limiting what you will try, you might want to consider it temporarily.
