anally retentive about your drums Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Hi, I'm wondering if any of you out there are anally retentive about setting up your drums? It could be anything that you do. Any habits or ritualistic things that you do. I'll always put heads on with the logos right above the badge for instance and I have to have my ride and crash cymbal at the same height. I don't get the tape measure out, but if there is a noticeable difference I'll have to fix it. There! I said it! :P

Are all drummers this way or is that just me? Maybe we have some even "weirder" people out there. I'd like to know.

Long ago I arrived at the conclusion that all drummers have a touch of OCD (Obessessive Compulsive Disorder) to one degree or another. We play patterns repeatedly for hours on end and it gives us pleasure, it 'scratches an itch' we all have in our brains. Like you I have to have everything set-up the same way every time. Drums, cymbals, hardware all have their place and God help them if they're out of position! Logos on heads at 12 o'clock, cymbal stands marked for height, etc. etc. etc. LOL

We've had a few of these threads before, I'm sure you'll be hearing from members of our OCD ward... :p

John

Too many great drums to list here!

I'm sure we all are! At a weekly gig, whenever I take the bass drum out of it's case, I twirl it on my knee.

I also put the heads on with the logos above the drum badge, and when I set up my cymbals the logo is in the 12 o'clock position, even though they don't stay there.

My ride is lower than my crash, but multiple crashes are set at the same height.

What day should our drum OCD support group start getting together? It can't be Wednesdays, because that's the day my gear acquisition syndrome support group meets.

Yes sir I am very particular like a lot of us! Drum head logos always toward the badges, no one touching my drums ( I swear I was just watching COPS) and I break down things in a certain order. Only had one drunk idiot hop on my set at a gig and I about lost it!

I've been there. That always gets my Irish up. The red mist descends. Ha! No, I'm too polite... I'd just ask him to take it easy on my vintage hoops or something.

You gotta have the logos at 12 o'clock! Usually when I go to a rehearsal studio there's a drum set there, minus the snare. kick pedal and cymbals. It boggles the mind sometimes when I find the thing set up all over the place without any kind of rhyme or reason to it and then when I go to adjust the stands they're fastened so tight I need a pliers to loosen them. It makes me wonder what kind of gorilla was last to use this set? Often times I think Ringo Starr himself was there when I see the drum throne is 5 feet off the ground. I always leave the kit as I'd like to find it. The drummer in after me has it sweet. :D

as others have noted in a way all drummers are alittle OCD though speaking for myself i don't consider it OCD, i consider it a matter of professionalism.

once i reached a certain playing level i also wanted a professional appearence. and being a drum tech i also learned certain things at that professional level that the regular joe either doesn't think of or doesn't care about.
