black beauty/supra vs powertone/dyna Last viewed: 1 second ago
I agree.
(He says as he ducks behind the guitar amps)
They are all good drums, with different sounds, that appeal to different people. COB Powertones are great drums and can usually be had for a good price.
the kook just can't stand that Ludwigs rule, the BB's are legendary and have been around longer than Rogers has even been in and out of business. Lets get this straight, Ludwig when first starting, builds their owns drum and they still do, Rogers first starts they are actually rebadge Gretsch drums.
The Ludwig name (particularly the Supra and BB) is synonymous with all those classic rock/pop hits/drummers of the 60s and 70s that so many people love and look(ed) up to like Gretsch's is for jazz cats, but Rogers, Gretsch, Camco and even Slingerland and Sonor made quality metal snares that were just as solid and versatile. I actually prefer all of them to Ludwig, but if I explain why, I'll return to death threats. The Dyna ain't for everyone because it's so temperamental, but my COB Dayton Powertone was $50 and it's one of the best value buys out there. They're all good drums, its just what suits you and what won't eat up your budget.
I have a 60's COB dyna which is rather snappy. I have a COB Powertone which is fat but has a bit of a note in the sound so needs muffling really. I have a late 70's BB 14x6.5 and its wonderful. Very fat, quite dark, not to dry and has a nice ring to it. It is the best one of the bunch in my collection.

As some know here, I own, among other things, a backline rental company. Regardless of how many snares I have available my 6.5x14 BB is a first choice snare of the vast majority of drummers. I would guess it is at least as popular as all my other snare drums combined.
Obviously, there is name recognition to consider but if I were going to invest in snares, it would be BB hands down. It would pay for itself at nearly $700 long before a $150 Rogers snare. Rogers certainly made great and ingenious snare drums but I would not say better than Ludwig; just different and that is why there are no absolutes when dealing with art and taste. Which band is better, which drummer is better and which drum is better is a far too subjective question.
Truly, to answer the OP's actual question, the answer would be "wrong." (But still an opinion of course)

Why does everything have to be better or the best, when sound and music are completely subjective things? There's a reason the BB is legendary, and in most drummers arsenals.
The snares you mention sound DIFFERENT,then each other, not "better".
So,why aren't vintage Camco snares better or the best, because Dennis Wilson played one?:D

Steve it is because he is an immature kid. Hey Kook here is another thread from another immature kid just like you .. Oh wait it was you!!! two threads on the same theme. http://www.vintagedrumforum.com/showthread.php?t=45259
I think Kook might be trying to reassure himself that by not having a BB its all ok.
Well it IS ok. One day maybe treat yourself to one, but the main thing is how you can move the drumsticks around on the snares you have already. That is what gets you the kudos.
I've been a pro for decades without any of the "Holt Grail" crap you apparently need.
