black beauty/supra vs powertone/dyna Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Loading...

After reading through this thread I played with my Supra, Dyna and Powertone a bit more(sorry no BB) trying to be more conscious of the differences. One thing that I hadn't noticed is the tone control on both the Dyna and the Powertone is one pane over from the strainer. If the strainer is between your legs and you play a rimshot with your left hand (and are not a southpaw) it falls right over the muffler. Not only does the Dyna snare mechanism dry things out a bit but I think the muffler position affects the sound of both Rogers snares. Not in a bad way, just different. And it is handy to have it there beside the strainer and not under an Sm57 where the Supra muffler ends up.

Let me try this kook, Ludwig is better than Rogers period that is why a Black beauty sales for so much more than any metal rogers drum.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Ok then how come I see/hear COUNTLESS drummers prefering rogers-gretsch and camco rogers? And drummers that played ludwig used rogers swivo hardware and rogers had the best shells? How ya explain that//

kook. does this address Black beauties?. NO also Hal Blaine used a Ludwig lm 400 far more than any Rogers he had, Why is Ludwig still in business and Rogers is belly up! why do Ludwigs sale for more ??there is not a dynasonic on the planet that sales for close to what a legendary Black beauty sales for.

The blaemire shell were only the concert toms, the toms. bass drum snare and floor toms are Ludwig, Ringo used Ludwigs and unlike you I was alive when this all happened I don't have to read hear say. Ludwigs player roster as larger and had more pivotal players than rogers ever did, Buddy Rich started on Ludwigs and played them far longer than he did Rogers. Hal Blaine now is endorsed by Taye so what is your point?, do you know the history of Blaine and Ludwig? No !! you don't. I have been to two Of Blaine's clinics, have you? No ! Kook, I wouldn't be so coarse with you except your past comments are always your opinions of this is the best or that is the best, The Beatles really get you bucked up, It is great you have a passion for the Beach boys, Rogers drums etc, But you just marginalize yourself and your post and comments from other members. To also address the best shells, I restore drums I have had to repair alot of Rogers shells due to ply seperation, The best shells are Leedy/conn shells. I have owned a ton of these drums I have never had to repair one single shell they are extremely well built and are noted by many experts as the best vintage shells.

People like what they like and that is the way it should be with anything that cannot be quantified such as music, musicians and musical instruments.

Rogers, Gretsch and Camco made and are making (in the case of Gretsch) great drums, though it is interesting to me how many people get upset over the idea of boutique drum "assemblers" that don't build their own shells. Who made Roger's shells? Who made shells for Gretsch...and what about Camco for that matter? Of course I am digressing, but you did mention that Rogers "had" the best shells. I think you would be in pretty good company if you decided to state that you thought Rogers had the best hardware or was the most inventive company of their day. Opinions still of course, but arguably factual.

I think the point that is trying to be made is that you often don't ask questions, but instead phrase questions in terms of your opinion which leads one to believe that you are only looking to validate those opinions as opposed to learning something specific.

If I ask the question: "Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer ever, right?" then the reader instantly knows my opinion and realizes that apparently all I want to hear is validation of my supposition, not an actual answer to a posed question which, in fact is not a question but a statement, regardless of the question mark. By the way, that particular example would be a question that has no correct answer...but Buddy was a monster and freak of nature, like him or not. That is a fact and not debatable as far as I am concerned.

So, if you like the sound of a Power Tone or a Dynasonic and those drums fit within the idiom in which you use them, then they are as great as they need to be. That does not diminish a Black Beauty, a Royal Ace, a Radio King or any other drum for that matter; any one of which may be someone else's holy grail drum. Truly, they are drums, the simplest of all instruments and if it works for you, then perfect. These are not points worth arguing. There is far too much information to learn to waste time arguing over inarguable points. Drums are too much fun for that drivel.

I never meant to undermine ludwig or state opinions as fact, I only elaborate on retrospective facts and make comparisons based on what Ive heard/read from people that were there in the 60s or drummers that've played old and new kits- that sound better? And I dont undermine ringo either it jus irks me when he gets singled out knowinf that dennis wilson was a contemporary with at least equal or more ability/ neither one of them did more than keep a solid beat and dennis had a charisma that was envied by all- esp keith moon who wanted in the beach boys and knew they were the bees knees ha
