hihat malfunction Last viewed: 4 hours ago

From what you describe.. It's possible that the top washer that butts up against the stopper ( those nipped bits on the main shaft ), may have slipped up and over the stopper. This would allow the spring to ride up too. So check that that washer is a snug fit against the stopper.. This would have been obvious when you disassembled it (If you had known what to look for at that time).

All I can think of...

Cheers

John

i think i may have found my problem....i think it is the spring

im thinking with this all assembled inside the stand tube it should be as in the photos above. but when i put the rod and spring inside the tube, the spring catches on the thing inside that the adjuster goes up n down on (that may be the linkage John spoke of) and does not allow the spring to sit on the adjuster thing. with the spring being flaired it gets caught up. looks like i need a new spring or at least a different one thats not flaired at the end. what do you think?

Could be right.. But I think it needs a, or, the, washer on top of the spring..

Cheers

Also, just a guess but check the rod itself. Make sure it is safe. I had someone knock my hihat over and the top of the rod hit a wall. It bent the rod enough that the hihat would not function until I discovered the problem and bent the rod back.

hi John, there is no washer. but you have giving me an idea how to fix it with this spring. if i turn the spring around with the flair up...the rod n spring will go in the tube like it is supposed to. i will definitely need a washer with the flair up. thanks for your help.

nope...that wont work either. with the flaired end up the tube the bottom hat sits on wont slide all the way in, it gets caught up on the flair. what if i cut the flaired part off? it may work long enough til i can get a different spring ??? im gonna try it, the spring is useless as is.

ill fix this thing yet.

If you do cut off the flair.. Maybe an extra Nylon spacer would help too.. Should work..

Good luck

Hi, I've had the same issue but on an older model but don't remember the blue and white nylon gear adjustment thingy. My spring was flared at one end also and think they're supposed to be that way to fit on the metal part above the blue thingy. Anyway it appeared to be the spring was worn without much spring tension left in it. I couldn't find a new spring either. You could try (stretching, as mentioned) putting a washer at the top of the spring and one at the bottom first. Like in pic one. The washer cannot be too big to fit back in the tube.

If that doesn't work, you could do like I did. I had found two springs that equaled the length of the original spring at ACE hardware and put washers in between, above and below them which worked like in pic two.

Good luck and hope something works for you!
