Lets discuss the bread and butter lugs Last viewed: 43 minutes ago

So.. I've understand that they crack.. always!

I just bought a b/b kit.. Lovely drums, haven't got them yet though cause they are on the way..

Anyways, according to the seller none of the lugs are cracked, but I know some are.. they have to be.

I actually wanna use this kit to play on, but I don't know if I can do that without risking to damage the lugs any further.. What's gonna happen if I just go on without changing them to those expenssive replicas?

Well, I am going to go out on a limb here and say they will, eventually, crack. That said, the only way I can even imagine delaying that day is to do the least fun thing. That is to let loose the tension each and every time you play, practice, look at, these drums.

Just my :2Cents:.....

as weird as it might sound I didnt know about this when I bought them.. Ive got a good price so it was a impulsive thing..

I already consider selling them now.. but Ive seen many b/b kits out there that are in use and all, and they all seemed fine.. we'll see what I'll do..

I am no expert. I would spring for the repros if you can and enjoy the set as much as you may. Enjoyable may as well imply the fact that if saved, the original hardware can be replaced so you may "look at it" (bummer) This would therefore increase the percieved value to me. Those drums must sound fantastic for one. Two, how many times do you really get to enjoy an expensive purchase the way you might a drumset on the night you happen to be on fire with it? Three, certain drums feel better than others and I can usually tell by gingerly playing them. Feel Em out. Do you plan on reselling for profit or simply collecting for the sole purpose of doing so? Later and thanks for stimulating my brain.

This is what I did on my Mardi Gras B&B set - I switched out all of the batter lugs to the repros and left the original lugs on the res sides. I went with the lightest res heads possible and then actually reinforced the interiors of the existing ones with cold-weld putty. The tuning on the drums is low for the sake of not stressing the res side lugs. Thing is - the repros are hella expen$ive and Mr. Petty takes a hella hella long time to send 'em to you. But they are really awesome. :2Cents: The other alternative is to pull the B&B's and sell 'em (you can get about $10 a pop) and replace 'em w\Beavertails. You'll actually make a profit in selling the former and buying the latter. Thing is you'd have to widen the mount holes ! Or just play the B&B's untl they crack. Or do the cold weld on all lugs and don't buy any repros & see how they last. It's a sticky situation when you want it to be a players set, really - one of those instances where indeed the it's more valuable w\ the uncracked B&B's - but realistically it cannot be played using contemporary heads and contemporary tuning.

how much bigger are the bevertails? I havent descided if this is gonna be a players kit or if Im gonna try to sell it to a collector. I havent got the drums yet, but according to the seller, none of the b/b lugs have cracked (!).

If anyone is interested in buying the lugs, Im opened for offers, I might even consider a trade for a set of bevertails.

Unfortunately beavertail lugs are longer than B&B lugs and aren't interchangeable directly. You would have to re-drill the shells to make them work...

Yes, correct !....that's what I alluded to above....you have to widen or 'ovalize' the holes because the B'tail spacing is a tad wider than the B&B spacing.

Look...if you are just gonna sell it for a profit...then I suggest finding a Rogers forum and just listing it there....

If you are gonna go the B'tail route...just hit eBay and buy a bunch of the older ones (Clevelands or Dayton era) in three or four auctions....they only run about $3-4/ea...

I feel your pain. I have the same problem.

I posted a while back about a collector quality B and B Rogers kit I have.

I did list mine for way way high on eBay once just to ease my pain but in the end I think I'm just going to do exactly what I bought it for.... to play it.

I am in process of thinning my collection down from about 20 kits to 4 or 5. I have a few more kits to play with before I get to the Rogers but when it's turn comes, it's definitely going to get tuned and played.

And, if I like it, it's going to get properly tuned and played whether lugs break or not. If it becomes one of my regular kits, I'll probably go with BT lugs.

I have never actually researched the replacement of BnB with BT's. How much elongation is required to make the change? Anyone know?

I know its a HEFTY investment, but if I was planning on keeping a B&B lugged kit for myself, I would invest in the reproduction lugs and save the originals somewhere, just in case I ever did sell the kit. The beavertails look nice, but I couldn't let myself deface and devalue a kit like that to make it playable, but thats just me. I would rather save the money and spend it on the repros just so I could say I have a giggable B&B kit. Plus the B&B lugs just look so cool!
