once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.
I later offered $1000 out of respect for the hardware and cymbals. Figured that outer ply would look pretty nice with some waxing and they probably sound ok. I was rebuffed! there were no harsh words at all, although I wasn't really pleased after the long drive home . . .
that was a 600 $ kit if that sorry but its hard to sell a kit in nice shape for that

being that you are in Australia and kits like this are about as common as they are in NZ (i.e. not common) then I think $1k would be a bargain even with the wrap issues. With hardware and a Supra (an easy $450 on its own in Aus) and then the cymbals on top, there's $1k before you even look at the rest of it. I think he'll get $1500 easy and probably $2k. As for the wrap issue on the bass drum, I'd find a patch from somewhere and fix it that way. I had that done with this floor tom and it's hard to spot if you're not looking.
And I mean it would be a bargain for somebody who is looking for that set-up.
The snare drum is worth $350. The cymbals are 70s Zildjians worth about $350. The wrap cannot be saved. The whole kit is rusty. The drums are Granitone 6 ply. All of the heads need replacing. I don't see a bargain and the seller wants 2K.

Cool. They are 3 ply. 6 ply are clear interior with no re-rings.
What makes you certain of this? No one else seems to know. I do know one thing. $1000 is generous for this drum kit.

70s 3 ply drums had either clear or granitone interiors. 6 ply drums were just clear. I have owned both and they are quite different as you can see in the photos below.
I'll take your word for it on value as you've seen the kit and I have not. The guy sounds a bit too shady to be bothered with anyway.
After reading a history on the Ludwig build , they actually used up old 3 ply stock in the late 70's so look out drummers there could be some sleepers out there in the good stuff ....

Andrew; not dismissing your knowledge at all. This is how I learn stuff. So - if this kit has re-rings and a Granitone interior - it's 3 ply? Would that be a safe bet? Also on the value of the kit - it's very neglected. If someone really wanted 13/14/16/18/24 - as you propose - yes, it would be desirable. The complete hardware makes this kit worth anything. But the seller has been trying to sell it for years and quite a few good restorers have passed. I'm guessing they offered more than $1000. But I don't want to break up the kit and that is precisely why it's worth less to me. Cheers, PK.
