New to VDF, Have a question about a Vintage Ludwig Kit Last viewed: 17 minutes ago

Hey guys and gals, I'm new to the forum, been playing drums for a couple years now. I'm a regular over at drum chat, I just got referred here by one of the guys there because I know nothing about vintage drums, and obviously you all do, so Here it goes.

I found this today, the guy says it's from 1965, but that's really all he knows about it. I don't know if he play drums, or if he bought it for decoration around his house, but said it's been on the shelf for years and figures he could sell it to someone that could enjoy it. ie. Me! I am really loving the color and set up, it appears to have a 20" kick, going by proportion to other objects around the kit, I asked him, he didn't know, said he would measure it and the other toms. It comes with the ride, hats, which are zildjian, again, he don't know what kind, but said they all came with the kit including the original hardware. He said the lower hoop for the rack tom is missing, and one of the claws for the rear kick drum hoop, otherwise everything is original and in tact. So what is it? A downbeat kit? Club Date? I have no clue, but it looks like a few pieces of new hardware, some new heads, and a lot of elbow grease can turn this kit into a beauty! Anyone have any info or clues?? Maybe even value of this kit? I appreciate anyone's help. Thanks

It is not clubdate it looks more like a super classic, can't see the snare drum very well, It looks like it's missing one lug on the bass drum, and t handle and claw, also the bottom rims are missing and all that goes with it, until you get all the particulars can't give a value! take pics of the cymbal stamps and pic of the snare drum and hardware. and maybe oddball will press spell check sometime, can't hardly understand a thing he prints.

Yea, he didn't send me a good pic of the snare, but it's the matching one to the kit. And yes he did say one of the lugs and claws are gone and the hoop on the tom. Other than that he said everything is in tact. I'm having a hard time finding info about what makes each style of kit different from one another, ie. clubdate, downbeat, super classic, most pics I have seen of super classics, seemed to have larger kick drums with them, so that's why I didn't figure it was one of those.

I wouldn't change anything on the kit, besides just find a matching lug and claw and hoop for the tom, all period correct, and polish the entire kit to leave it as original as possible as oddball says. On my other forum one guy said about 850 for everything should be in the ballpark for this kit. Does that sound right?

Here look at this link, it's at the top of right hand side of the VDF home page under vintage drum guide,http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/ludwig_drumsets_1963.html also $850.00 is a steal

850.00 was just a quote from a guy on my other forum, he was just thinking that was probably the value, the actual seller is wanting 1200.00 for everything

Thanks for the Link!

Not a 65 model, by the pre-serial badge, it is early 60's....depending if all the badges are the same, as price is determined by a "matched set". Snare seems to be a 6 lug pioneer. Sparkling Gold wrap, and looks to be in great condition. Should be red felt mufflers also. Is there any "date stamps" available?

$1200 is steep IMHO, as you don't have all the details. In your 3rd photo, is that road rash on the tom?

I was thinking it was steep too, that looks more like a reflection, in the first pic you can see the same area of that tom and nothing is there, that's my guess.

Here is another pic I found, didn't even see this one. The kick drum appears to be missing a claw on the front lower end too, but it only has 8 lugs, on that link it showed the super classic having 10 lugs on the kick, or could you get a super classic with a 20" kick?
