Looks like a 20/12/14 Downbeat to me. I'd buy it for $1200. Great kit!
New to VDF, Have a question about a Vintage Ludwig Kit Last viewed: 2 hours ago
I have looked at the pictures closely, and want to change my mind about stating I thought it was a pioneer model snare on this kit.....I believe it to be a Jazzfestival. If you can see 4 lugs from the side view it is a jazzfest, only 3 is a pioneer. Mind you I can see only 3 in the photo, but I think the other is hidden as it is not a full view. Anyone agree?? Great kit and a great price if it is!
I had to bail on you last night it was late, that is a Jazzfestival snare drum they are going for $400.00, and the price is cheap not high , the cymbals could be zildjian trans stamp, also the hardware if it's the right hihat stand and snare stand sale high, If that was my kit for sale you would at least pay me $1200.00 for it. quinntheeskimo is right now that I can see it. I would seriously go check this kit out, I'm a member at drumchat but haven't posted much there, I like it better here on the VDF
.
Awesome, it's good to be reassured that it's worth what the guy is asking, I am planning to go check it out before the weekend is over. What are some key things to be looking for when I go check it out and inspect it? I guess besides not having the original snare, the rest could be matching, is there anyway to tell since it don't have serial numbers and assuming the date stamps are rubbed off?

In most cases the serial numbers are in any given sequences, so they probably won't match anyway,
the main thing on this kit is see if the owner has the missing parts, also check the bearing edges to make sure they haven't gotten chewed up from not having the bottom heads on them, if this is your first vintage kit, the bearing edges don't look like modern edges do, they are not as sharp, that is a big part of the ludwig sound,
also the sound from this particular time in 1960-1963 pre serial number bagdes, are some of my favorite ludwig wood drums.try to pay him less money if he doesn't have the parts, the cob rims you'll need will not be cheap towards $100.00 just for those two items alone. good luck
Yeah man, the missing parts are your bargaining tool. Looks like calf heads on the toms, and it has the bass drum mounted cymbal arm. Grab it fast but wear your Poker Face!
Who said the snare isn't original? This is just like Ringo's first kit which came with a Jazz Festival snare, and in the same time frame. Unless there is something seriously wrong that isn't revealed by the pictures, this kit is well worth the asking price. And it is Gold Sparkle, which isn't as highly valued as Oyster Black would be in this situation, but is nevertheless a rare and much-sought wrapped finish. Buy it! Car Driving2

He just emailed me and said tomorrow he will pull them off the shelf and answer any questions I have or take any pictures I want. He also said he has had them since his dad bought them for him in 1965, said the lower hoop on the rack Tom is long gone for years, but both hoops are on the floor Tom. Maybe they have the original heads? Who knows at this point. Honestly I'm in love with the color, thats what caught my eye to begin with. I've seen the oyster black, I like it, but would take this color over that any day of the week. I'm really not looking at it as a resale thing anyways, I just want a really sweet kit that is different than what everyone has nowadays and this could be it! I would probably be watching eBay to add a 16x16 floor Tom at some point since 12 14 16 is my favorite setup. I've never heard vintage drums in person, will the sound mix well with modern style rock music? Nothing heavy like metal or anything, just rock.

That's good news. and to put it mildly, yes these are the drums that rock came from and are! and yes you have heard vintage drums on most recordings and I'm talking present day, in the studio this is what is used not what the drummer of said group is endorsing.
Is it me,...or is that set itty bitty ??
