Out of curiosity, if this kit was 100% complete, with no missing parts, all cleaned up and shiny what would it go for? Not that i want to resell it, ive just made some blind purchases in the past and I gotta have my ducks in a row when the wife wonders why I spent so much money, lol
New to VDF, Have a question about a Vintage Ludwig Kit Last viewed: 4 minutes ago
Well I`m glad it was my old eyes !!
Three lugs, rods and claws,..plus a bottom hoop for what I see is a 13x9 all can be period correct purchases for what looks to me as a Super Classic !!
The market will dictate what you`ll get for it cuz some people want that kit more than others, the How much question is a tough call most wont make !!
Unlike the kit also being discussed like this,...this looks to have all the original order. I looked at the drum guide and you should too !! It will give you an idea of what you got !!
To me,..it appears to be a 67 Super Classic !!

Nope. It's a 12" drum because it has the small Classic lugs on it. It's not a Super Classic because the Super Classic has a 22" TEN-lug bass drum. That's a Downbeat kit -MUCH more desirable to both collectors and players alike!
How much is it worth? In superb condition...factory-matched, unfaded gold sparkle with a Jazz Fest, cymbals and hardware -all cleaned and shined to near-new condition...I wouldn't be surprised if it made it over the $2K mark, even in the current economy. I really don't see the vibrant gold sparkle color on many matched kits these days.
I'd say between 1700-2200^ IF it's all cleaned and restored meticulously.

I saw the baseball bat and could only find it on the Super Classic !!
The custom snare is what I found different,...But I`m still learn`n the Tricks of the trade !!

Notice where the missing lugs are,...there`s not much fade at all on this kit !!

Now, just FYI... IF that kit was two years older and you had a matching gold sparkle Downbeat SNARE drum to complete the Downbeat KIT, you'd have a much more valuable package. I'm not certain, but I don't think there were any 3-ply Downbeat snare drums being made in 1967. I think they stopped production on those in 1966....but I could be wrong.
The "funny" thing is that the Jazz Festival snare drum is a very desirable snare drum, but I'd have to double check to confirm whether it was ever offered as an option for a Downbeat kit or not. I'm thinking that, by 1967, it would have been a Supra...but I'm going to check on that now......stand by for edit....
*Edit*
Yep. it was the Supra that was listed as "the" snare drum for a 1967 Downbeat kit. Some might view this as a slight "problem" because of the fact that a Jazz festival snare drum wasn't listed in the catalogs as an option -purists are sometimes like that...*cough*...However, like I say...the Jazz Fest is a more desirable snare than a Supra is to collectors...in most instances. But, you could easily get a Supra to go along with your kit and then have the option of the Jazz Festival. This option would ADD to the intrigue of the kit, in my opinion.

2 years older? Than 1965? I'm pretty sure it is because none of the badges have serial numbers on them, so it has to be 63 or older, I also asked a few more questions and got one more pic. He told me all of the heads are the original ones that came on it. He is the original owner, he just has no clue what happened to the spurs or the hoop. Obviously he took off the batter head on the kick drum to put that fabric in there for a muffle. He sent me a pic of the bottom of the tom tom because I was asking about possible damage from the hoop missing. Here is what I got, is this ding really gonna be a problem, or could it be left as is, since it is on the reso side?

I'm thinking, Hopefully since the other heads haven't been removed, all of those bearing edges "should" be in good shape!
Oh! WAIT! I'm confused! That drum is a 1964* tom tom -not a 1967! I thought the kit was supposed to be a 1967!? kit. The red felt BB muffler indicates a 1964 drum. Let me go back and re-read some earlier posts. Maybe I missed something.

*edit* or a 1963! heh heh

Okay...sorry about the confusion! I think Im caught up, now...and I have also looked more closely at the pics...
You have a 1963-64 Downbeat kit. You can look for ink-stamped dates inside the shells for exact confirmation of the date of production. Usually, red felt mufflers are 1964. Also, that's the earlier style of rail consolette, too. I don't know why I didn't look at that before I stuck my foot in my mouth and said "1967". That was dumb! heh heh.....*ahem*
The Jazz Festival snare drum was NOT listed as an option for that kit in the catalog. However, the Jazz Fest snare drum is a very desirable snare drum nonetheless and was likely purchased with the kit when the kit was new.
Ideally, it would have had a 4 X 14 Downbeat snare drum to accompany it.
The bearing edge ding shouldn't be a big problem to fix -or just leave it alone, but it may give you a bit more bargaining leeway.
Nice drum set. Get it if you can would be my advice. A little work and some tweaks and you'll have a beauty!
