I never said ringo wasnt great, but hes gotten plenty of due credit. And dennis even tho he learned drums right when the BBs started, he picked em up quick and proved to be a prodigy at the age of seventeen, just like his brother carl- both great players and singers...and yeah it cant be denied that the beatles were top sellers but the beach boys pioneered a cultural revolution thag spanned decades,, the beatles broke up in 69, and were done as a live band in aug66, and ANY true music zealot is more than aware of dennis wilson. The beatles had eight landmark albums: meet, hard days night, help, rubber soul, revolver, sgt pepper, the white album, and abbey rd/ the beach boys had WAY more: surfin safari, surfin usa, surfer girl, lil deuce coupe, shut down vol2, all summer long, today, summer days, pet sounds, smiley smile, wild honey, friends, 20/20, sunflower, surfs up, holland....and a half dozen others spanning five decades to the present with their new album making it to #3 its first week! Thats quite an achievement!!

I'd give them two 'landmark' records; Today and Pet Sounds. Maybe You could add Surfin Safari and Surfin USA to that list.

For what it's worth, Rolling Stone tends to agree with me (even though most of the time I dont agree with them...) and the Beach Boys get 3 nominations in the top 500 records. Conversely, the Beatles clock in with 10 (all while Bob Dylan slips in a cheeky 11...).

As for the 5 decades part... is that always a good thing?

I said average. Although, in fairness, I have a hair-trigger on the dial when someone tries to sneak a Beatles song in on me, so by default, I really don't have much real-world experience with Ringo's playing to accurately comment. I do know that in every "best drummer ever in the universe" debate that I have seen, Ringo's name never comes up. That is telling, and was my point..............NP, Bonham, Moon, Rich, Krupa and some jazz guys, always are mentioned. Ringo Starr and Dennis Wilson? Rarely if ever make the cut in those discussions. Why is that?

Because some people judge drummers by chops alone and not swing, groove and musicallity, not to mention originality. That's where Ringo shines. He was making stuff up as he went along. He was in uncharted terratory, and his band was breaking new ground with each new album.Even if you hate the Beatles, you have to acknowledge that fact.Listen to songs like 'I'm a Loser" and "Help" and tell me Ringo dosen't swing. The guy plays a great shuffle, amongst other completely original parts. He may not be the best, most technical drummer in the universe, but he delivered the goods on the most original, diverse and cultural changing music ever played.Huge props for that. The same for Krupa,Bonham,Moon, and Rich, who all acknowledged Ringo.Rich even said he was "adequate"...high praise from Buddy.

Funny one of the Hall monitiors and forum owners has brought up a valid point???... Quote>> LOL - The entire thread was intended as 'kook-bait' from the giddy-up. Poor kook bites down hard on the chum the trollers set out for him -every time-. It's like watching someone gleefully and repeatedly tease a junkyard dog with a stick from the other side of a chain link fence.

What's the point really?

I just thought I'd express my thoughts on the now regularly occurring Ringo/Wilson debate. Maybe it would be more appropriately named, Kookadams vs. anybody who even mentions Ringo and Wilson in the same sentence debate.

John Funny you have 4 post on this thread, So then WHAT IS THE POINT ?? This was not bait for kookadams, I told him to post his own poll multiple of times he never did so I posted one as I told him I was going to do. Also this is to hopefully open his horizions to other artist/drummers. He has the right to express his opinion, but when praticing revisionist history as he has on almost evey occassion, Then that I will address. Multiple forum members have given him accurate and helpful info. Now lets get back to what the thread is, A poll !!!

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Ringo obviously. He was a inventive player. He has a much more extended recorded library.

I don't think Dennis played on much except the first few recordings until the Wrecking Crew became the rhythm section of the Beach Boys. At the end he wasn't even playing in the Beach Boys. They had to let him go, but he would show up at concerts and be so disruptive behind stage, they would have to let him play a song or two. This is pretty much a non argument and definitive poll.

At this point it is 23-2. If this were a soccer match this would be a drubbing. If it was a political race, the Wilson camp would have conceded days ago at 92% to 8%.

At the end of the day, people enjoy who they enjoy. Certainly nothing wrong with that and, in fact, everything right with it. Regardless, to dismiss the Beatles as marketing hype is truly having no understanding of what happened. The Beatles stand alone as a band, as performers, as songwriters and as cultural icons. What they accomplished will never be equalled as the market is now so very diverse and our attention spans are too short. Their are several bands and artists that have done very well and note that many of them are from Europe: The Stones, Led Zeppelin, U2, Pink Floyd, Genesis, etc. Look at the acts that have been around that can fill stadiums as a measure of that kind of success. None of those acts have had the overall cultural impact of the Beatles. How many of those acts have TV specials about them, theatrical performances on a regular basis, a Cirque Show for crying out loud. Elvis might be the only star to come close to that level of cultural impact.

No offense to Kook but while the Beach Boys were great, they did not have anywhere near the impact of the Beatles. No how, no way. If all the members of both bands were still alive today, which reunion would be heralded as the event of the millennium? Hands down it would be the lads from Liverpool.

Another point to further show that Ringo is more influential is the fact I haven't seen one single thread on this forum about a "Dennis Wilson" kit being found, sold, put-together, or otherwise. There are dozens of threads and postings, probably hundreds, that talk about a "Ringo" kit, and some are detailed down to where the lugs and badge are on the snare drum, in relation to the strainer. This is also telling, in my opinion.

Mark- Can you add Stephen Adler to the poll so I can vote please? LOL

Dennis all the way! Id like to see a drummer play open handed like he did keeping time with the left hand, arms uncrossed and with the right handed setup of the hats and snare on the left. Dennis was SOOO underrated and there was nothing great about ringos technique Cmon!! Ringo never looked "cool" like dennis, dennis was charasmatic , good looking and such a talent....I dont care if the beatles "sold more records" doesnt mean they made better music/ it was all marketing and commercialism and lets not forget that the beach boys BEAT the beatles in 1966 as THE biggest rock band in the world.

Wow, sorry mate but I really can't agree with you. Not to say that the beach Boys were anything less than brilliant because its a fact that they were. Your possibly right that Wilson was underrated although I doubt he gave a toss to that. Ringo looked cool, Ringos technique is fine by me, the Beatles back catalogue is insane, even the little B sides are brilliant songs. Luckily for us both bands survive into this century still sounding fresh. Stop trying to shove in competition where is doesn't exist, embrace it all. You will be far better off for it and enjoy life more.

A matter of fact Buddy Rich(my childhood inspiration) would of completely smoked them both, made them both sound like beginners but would of sounded absolutely horrendous playing in either of those bands.
