Poll, which drummer inspired you to play drums ringo starr or dennis wilson ? Last viewed: 0 seconds ago
Pretty darn good drummer and performer for 74 years old.
I agree the Beatles are the result of the best marketing minds of the day earning their money. However, I have to disagree and say that record sales do sort of dictate the winners and losers as far as the theme of this thread, which was influence. Doesn't more records being sold mean more people are listening to their music, therefore being influenced? It is logical, no? This is all pre-internet, of course, when people actually had to pay for music.....lol. With all the cyber toys now, record sales do not equate to success anymore, IMO, and the worst thing is we are such a fickle society anymore, who loves the next best thing, I wonder if we will ever see bands like Rush, Iron Maiden, and the others that have been playing the same genre and style of music, for thirty or forty years? The really interesting thing will be which two drummers someone lists on this very question thirty years from now as there may not be such clear cut choices.........
Here's something interesting,to kind of reinforce the record sales theory as being an indicator of influence. The "Beatles" sold in excess of 71 million dollars(yes.million) in CD/DVD sales last year,2013.I love the BB's but,I'd bet my pension to what you got in your pocket, the the BB's don't come anywhere near that. Not bad for a band that hasn't been a band since 1970.
I'd also make that bet that if you asked youger players who so listen to the Beatles and Ringo, who was a larger influence,Dennis or Ringo, you'd likely get "who's Dennis Wilson?".
Ask some guys who are known as shredders like Neil Peart,Mike Mangini,Derrik Roddey,or Mike Portnoy that question, and you'll get Ringo .....every,single time. Our own Bermuda uses WWRD as he works out drum parts with Wierd Al.What...Would...Ringo...Do= WWRD.
How about the younger players and their kids being big Ringo/Beatle fans.Ever hear of a tribute band called Yellow Matter Custard?Mike Portnoy,Matt Bissonette(Greggs brother)Neil Morse, and Paul Gilbert.Shredder players and normally prog rock/metal guys.Love Ringo and the Beatles. That's influence.
Steve B
Ringo was a drummer since he was a young kid.
Dennis Wilson learned to play because the BBs needed a drummer and his brothers pressured him into it.
Ringo created his own parts and was an excellent and skilled musician.
Dennis Wilson was primarily a surfer. He played what ever groove Hal, or some other session drummer had recorded/established for the songs.
Ringo spent years in the studio honing his craft.
Dennis Wilson spent more time catching waves than time in the studio.
One guy was a musician... the other guy was a surfer.

Now you've done it Purdie! Wait for it................

I never said ringo wasnt great, but hes gotten plenty of due credit. And dennis even tho he learned drums right when the BBs started, he picked em up quick and proved to be a prodigy at the age of seventeen, just like his brother carl- both great players and singers...and yeah it cant be denied that the beatles were top sellers but the beach boys pioneered a cultural revolution thag spanned decades,, the beatles broke up in 69, and were done as a live band in aug66, and ANY true music zealot is more than aware of dennis wilson. The beatles had eight landmark albums: meet, hard days night, help, rubber soul, revolver, sgt pepper, the white album, and abbey rd/ the beach boys had WAY more: surfin safari, surfin usa, surfer girl, lil deuce coupe, shut down vol2, all summer long, today, summer days, pet sounds, smiley smile, wild honey, friends, 20/20, sunflower, surfs up, holland....and a half dozen others spanning five decades to the present with their new album making it to #3 its first week! Thats quite an achievement!!
Once again he is only a big deal to you. The parts Dennis Wilson played are elementary at best. You make such a big deal about his technique dennis wilson, Ringo was a left handed player playing a right handed drum kit, try it sometime and see how hard it is, setting your kit up backwards. The poll I have posted more than shows you Ringo is the guy Not that other guy.
