I never said ringo wasnt great, but hes gotten plenty of due credit. And dennis even tho he learned drums right when the BBs started, he picked em up quick and proved to be a prodigy at the age of seventeen, just like his brother carl- both great players and singers...and yeah it cant be denied that the beatles were top sellers but the beach boys pioneered a cultural revolution thag spanned decades,, the beatles broke up in 69, and were done as a live band in aug66, and ANY true music zealot is more than aware of dennis wilson. The beatles had eight landmark albums: meet, hard days night, help, rubber soul, revolver, sgt pepper, the white album, and abbey rd/ the beach boys had WAY more: surfin safari, surfin usa, surfer girl, lil deuce coupe, shut down vol2, all summer long, today, summer days, pet sounds, smiley smile, wild honey, friends, 20/20, sunflower, surfs up, holland....and a half dozen others spanning five decades to the present with their new album making it to #3 its first week! Thats quite an achievement!!

You kind of conviently left out "Meet The Beatles",Beatles 65",Yesterday and Today,Beatles for Sale,Magical Mystery Tour,Yellow Submarine, and and Let It Be.Not to mention Beatles One,Live at the Hollywood Bowl, and Let it Be Naked, and Live at the BBC,as well as numerous greatest hits albums.

Like I said 71 million dollars in CD and DVD sales, last year for a band that hasn't been a band since 1970.

Dennis Wilson a prodigy? Extremely doubtful by any stretch it the imagination.

Cultural revolution that spanned decades? You are talking about the Beatles right?

As i said before The Beatles stand alone in every respect. Possibly even just taken as songwriters. Ringo helped forge that sound and he was great.

Somebody earlier on the thread said "average Rock/Pop drummer" What does that mean? These guys (Ringo, Wilson et al) where inventing it.

Now you've done it Purdie! Wait for it................

LOL - The entire thread was intended as 'kook-bait' from the giddy-up. Poor kook bites down hard on the chum the trollers set out for him -every time-. It's like watching someone gleefully and repeatedly tease a junkyard dog with a stick from the other side of a chain link fence.

What's the point really?

I just thought I'd express my thoughts on the now regularly occurring Ringo/Wilson debate. Maybe it would be more appropriately named, Kookadams vs. anybody who even mentions Ringo and Wilson in the same sentence debate. Laughing H

That is funny John. By the way, I was in your neck of the woods yesterday. Spent the day in Lititz, PA. Great day at the entertainment fabrication capital of the world.

That's 15 minutes away from me! Why didn't you pm me? We could have hooked up for lunch, or you could have stopped by Rancho Purdie and hung with me for awhile.

Are you still in PA?

If I would have thought of that before I flew back to Nashville I would have. I'll probably be heading back that way in the next month so perhaps we can connect.

By the way, that new Rock Lititz facility is extremely impressive. It will be very interesting to see who will be rehearsing down the street from you. It would have been U2 first up next month if their album wasn't delayed.

Back to the topic at hand...sorry for the side track.

Ringo was the first drummer that inspired me to play. Then I discovered IAN PAICE from Deep Purple. From that moment on I knew how I wanted to sound.

Still love Ringo. He did things no other drummer could do or would do. He pretty much invented rock drumming. Not a bad word to say about Ringo.

I said average. Although, in fairness, I have a hair-trigger on the dial when someone tries to sneak a Beatles song in on me, so by default, I really don't have much real-world experience with Ringo's playing to accurately comment.

I do know that in every "best drummer ever in the universe" debate that I have seen, Ringo's name never comes up. That is telling, and was my point..............NP, Bonham, Moon, Rich, Krupa and some jazz guys, always are mentioned. Ringo Starr and Dennis Wilson? Rarely if ever make the cut in those discussions. Why is that?

Why is that? Well its because you can`t compare those guys to Ringo. They all played different styles and all of those different styles influenced most of us in different ways. They played more complex patterns than Ringo did and were in a completely alternate style of music.Ringo maybe wasn`t the best drummer in the world and to quote John Lennon..."he wasn`t the best drummer in the Beatles",but Ringo had a drum flare, style, body moves on kit and carisma that shouted out LOUD-i`m the perfect match to this Beatles puzzle and to put it simply...he was.
