That's an aluminum shell. The top rim is not a Slingerland and the throw off looks like it may have had a replaced part so it looks like a marching version.
Hi Rich... how about the ten-lug?
Would you know the Model that one goes by?
Thanks
unfortunately not,
I own a super sound king which is similar to the rk but has a twin"super sensitive" throw off
great drums, a top vinatge brass snare without the prices normally attached to the ludwig supra's, black beauty and the slingerland black beauty. Still has that great, rich dark brass sound we all love
I highly recommend...
Hi Rich... how about the ten-lug?Would you know the Model that one goes by?Thanks
Slingerland made a ton of those aluminum drums with 10 lugs.
I think they sold them with those student case/drum/pad kits.
In the catalog they list them as 8 lug drums, but there are many 10s out there.
Slingerland made two (or had made for them) different aluminum shells...the bumpy ones and the ribbed ones. The ribbed ones are pretty thin.
There are also 10 lug steel and COB Festival model snares out there, which were also never cataloged.
Thanks Rich and JWG........
I saw in some cat. scans sent by Ludwig-dude that those student/case/pad kits weren't assigned an actual model name, and I suspect, Rich, that that is where this drum started out.
How do these snares sound?
I remember them being pretty common on eBay a while ago (yes, in those student cases)
Don't see them as much any more.
Here's two lame pics... best I haveTen LugsRapid strainerTone Control two panels to the left of strainerSerial Numbered Black and brass Niles Badge in betweenIt's configured as a Festival from '62 to '70, but the shell doesn't fit cataloged offeringsExcept for the ten lugs, it is configured like a Student Aluminum (offered with six lugs), but again, not a ribbed shell.[Attachment: 10339]
It's most likely NOT brass, it's just a deviation of the No140 aluminum student model. Most likely to put out to compete with the slightly better 8 lug Acrolite offered by Ludwig.
I too HAD an 8 lug model, (shoulda KEPT that one) seems even though it wasn't cataloged (not a rare occurrence by far) there were enough of them to go around as I've seen quite a few of them, at least the 8 lug versions.
There were many instances that the catalog wouldn't cover something that didn't last long enough, or came out AFTER the catalog was released. Isn't the first time and it won't be the last time a catalog was wrong or incomplete.
HI. I have one also like your mine has brass not steel stick saver rims, this is slingerlands answer to ludwigs acrolite, but slingrlands came in two flavors 8 and 10 lugs it is called the STUDENT ALUMINUM SHELL MODEL MODEL NUMBER 140, AND MAN DO THEY SMOKE WITH BRASS RIMS AND PURESOUND CUSTOM SNARE WIRES ON THEM
Believe it or not, this is a Slingerland Model 140 Student Snare. That's right, a lower-end student model. I have one of the 10-lug versions but they were available in 8-lug as well. This drum was produced between 1973-1979 and came in a gray hard plastic case with stand and Slingerland-branded sticks. My son now uses it with a vintage Slingerland kit from about the same time. He plays in his high school jazz band and the drum just sounds awesome if tuned right and a moon gel or Evans MineMAD on the batter edge to cut down the ringing a little. It is a great drum, and although somewhat rare it is only selling from $150 to as much as $400 on the used market because it was initially meant to be a very entry-level snare. Have fun with it.
I grabbed off Craigs this past summer a 10 lug version...just shell/badge for $40..
I have the parts,of course, to complete...
Saw another one out east on there for $65 complete, but the guy wouldn't ship!:(
i dont know what it is , but would like to know cause i have the exact same one..... not like the one in the pic ,mine is a eight lug config...not ten. mine has the 60's niles badge
I have this snare also. 8 lug, Niles badge, stick saver hoops, 3 point strainer and NON-RIBBED Aluminum shell. Its a 64-67 era I believe. Mine is in very good shape, but missing dampner screw. I've seen mint condition examples sell for $750(!). I bought mine off eBay for $90 plus shipping, thinking it was a decent deal. Since then, I've not seen ONE like it on eBay. The ribbed shells are common. Do you have any info?
Thanks!!
