Rihanna, Ludwig Marcher, Music These Days Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Can anyone identify the Ludwig marcher BD in this clip?

Love the stripped down use of percussion in this song, and the replication of it live. With a lot of these newer artists, I can't tell from the super-slick studio production whether they used real instruments/players, but the proof is in the live performance.

I also posted this as a response to the ubiquitous "music these days" complaints [not on this forum per se] - I'd put this song up against any ever written, and likewise the performance.

[edit] I also just love the way she walks up to and adjusts the mic *seconds* before beginning to sing. Risky! :)

Hey Mitch, would it be a hi-jack if I posted my candidate for one of the 'best written' and 'performed' songs? It's not the direction you were headed in, but when you said, 'best songs ever written' I automatically thought of Jimi's, 'Castles Made Of Sand'.

I just didn't want to rip off your thread, or send it spinning off in another direction. It's just that 'Castles Made of Sand' for me, is one of the most beautifully written and performed, both words and music, pieces of music that I have ever heard. Mitch Mitchell is none too shabby here as well!

No worries John! A little Jimi is never untoward...

Anything current you're likin these days? I've been delving deep into rap and hip hop, cuz I did not really understand them. Glad I did as much of it is very playful humourous and creative. More like playing with sound than strictly writing a song in some cases. S'll good eh?

Not terribly recent but one of the modern groups I love.

I feed myself mostly a diet of Blues drenched Rock & Roll.

I'm more of a Castles in the Air / Don McLean kind of person.

Another vote for castles in the sand, Jimi Hendrix is or was my all time favourite, what's rock done since then?

I love the jazz era

Whhooooeee Thomas Pridgen! That dude is so heavy. I'd say The Mars Volta is one of the things rock has done since Jimi. I can't imagine him disapproving.

If you like The Beatles and Jimi you might like Tame Impala, or you might hate them for "ripping off" Jimi and The Beatles haha. I think they're pretty great. It's awesome cuz you can just copy the name into youtube and decide for yourself.

I don't mean to start a contest though. I was feeling like it's mostly crap these days until I looked into it is all. I read where working with Kanye got Paul McCartney into the top 5 for the first time in 30 years. So I checked out "Only One" and sure enough it's a great song IMHO.

There's tons of great new music out there if the desire to find it exists.

I`ve always liked Amanda Marshall`s version of Castles...This is the stripped down version...This clip was before she had a record deal...She used to close her shows with this...It`s a great tribute to a great musician!!

Show of hands for anyone who actually listened to the track? Start to finish. I listened to Jimi, nice touch there John. Rihanna was a negative and right now I need 2 positives, one to cancel out the negative and another, well, just so I can have a positive. :)

Chromeo - Here's your second positive! It fits in with the modern group theme too. Enjoy.

Crank the volume and click on the little square icon in the lower right of the video box to expand it full screen.

If Jimi Hendrix f'ked Miles Davis, the baby would be Mars Volta! The music is a mash of Rock/Jazz/psychedelic blues/ and about three other things. Jimi would definitely approve... so would Miles Davis! :D
