Hey John, big TMV fan here, more so the pre-Amputecture stuff when they operated as a band collectively (not Cedric and Omar's 'tool', so to speak) and Jon Theodore was hitting skins. He's a monster, not in the same way as Pridgen who is an all out freakshow, but rather in this weird organic flowing way that would just explode with unbelievable intensity then kill it to a whisper at the drop of hat. Maybe check out Antemasque if you haven't already; it's Omar and Cedric's post-TMV band. Less ridiculous, and probably more 'mainstream' than At The Drive In.

Also check out these guys, Fuzz, one of Ty Segall's (who is doing his best to overtake Van Morrion's discography size... The guy's probably real eased 40 or 50 EPs/LPs/7"s/Cassettes/etc in 8 or so years) side project things...

I saw the Mars Volta open for the Chili Peppers a few years back now & I have to say they were mind-blowingly good! The RHCP did a pretty ordinary show too which made the MV show stand out even more.

I'm more of a Castles in the Air / Don McLean kind of person.

Hey Larry I kept thinking you just got the title of the Jimi tune wrong lol. Finally caught on today, checked out Castles In The Air - I would think that genre is fully alive and well these days. Many artists up in these parts are doing this kind of music. Something to be said for "classic tracks" though to be sure...:)

My hand is up for having listened to the Rihanna track, start to finish, more than once. To my ears it's intensely beautiful. I wonder if it's possible to keep things positive, and focused on new artists....one can only hope.

Also no one has ID'd the Ludwig marcher :)

Ha thanks. Gotta make it back to Toronto one of these years. One of my favorite cities. So clean and nice mix of ethnicities. Plus I love that talk show Steven and Chris .. those guys are a hoot.

Chromeo - Here's your second positive! It fits in with the modern group theme too. Enjoy.Crank the volume and click on the little square icon in the lower right of the video box to expand it full screen.Foo Fighters - Something From Nothing - YouTubeMitch wrote: I'd say The Mars Volta is one of the things rock has done since Jimi. That's more like it! Great stuff John! Here's one for today. I like the sound of the drums on this record.

Nels Cline Singers - Me likey! Reminiscent of the kind of atonal, doesn't fit in a box stuff Frank Zappa used to write and perform - and I love Zappa.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Do let me know if you're ever heading up - we'll grab a beer and check some tunes up the way here at a little club that features singer/songwriters.

Oh yeah that is some crazy wicked sh*t! Live shows must be pretty hyper....the name made me think it was gonna be old folk songs lol.

Oh that's easy - it's Power-pop-funk-punk-indy-jazz!

Here's some Lupe Fiasco from 2009. I love this guy he's got a great sense of humour and steering the whole genre away from the guns and drugs, like in this one about a skateboard "gang". It's rap, so if you "hate rap", you defo do not want to click "play" :)

Ok, when I said that about Hendrix I didn't mean it literally! I should be able to listen to all this stuff on here tommorow as I've just hoovered up my earphones- speaker doesn't work.

I love the jazz era

I tried to repair a set of headphones once - the wires were like gossamer hairs lol. Couldn't do it.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being content with the massive amount of amazing tunes recorded in the past. Sometimes people dismiss offhand everything happening today though, without even checking any of it out. IMHO they do themselves a disservice, and it's kinda unfair to some of the artists currently busting their butts to keep things moving forward. >IMHO<
