I have a Slingerland 16 X14 FT with the post Radio King re-rings (solid maple, approx. 1") and a larger ply ring in the middle. Based on your pics it's the same drum you have. The shell is actually two 8 X 14s and the middle ring is used to hold them together. A great sounding drum and a good substitute for a 16 X 16! Always remember that "Back In The Day" you could order damn near anything and they were happy to make it for you!FYI

How do you know this? I mean did you take the ring or wrap off? I didn't realize Slingerland made 8x14 shells, did they uses them for snares?

Another question, is there anyway to date the Rogers leg mounts? I noticed the bottom of the legs come to a point. I've only seen ones that are flat.

Yes, they made 8x14 three ply snare shells in the 30's-40's. Here is one....

You can see/feel where they are joined under the blue sparkle wrap.

Never play it the same way once.

I can't really see or feel anything. Were all drums made with the 3ply mahogany/poplar/mahogany shells from the 30's-50's referred to as a Radio King?

In the 1959 Slingerland catalog the toms, etc are referred to as Radio King. By the 1963 catalog they are not.

I looked at the 59 catalog, the Gene Krupa outfit said Radio King toms and kick, but the Midern Jazz outfit did not. Did they use different shells on those?

I highly doubt that two 8x14" shells were fused together. To make this floor tom. Rk snare shells still at this time were high sellers for Slingerland meaning the 3 ply shells also. I've owned a lot if the 3 re ring shells, This is just my take on it.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

I don't buy that either, it doesn't make much sense, why would you want to fuse together two 8x14 shells when they offered 14x14 floor toms.

Why would they put a re-ring at the 8" point of the drum? Did they do that for the 16x16 floor toms?
