Who uses two rides? Last viewed: 1 second ago

From AZBill

Used to use 2 (late 70's Z Rock 21 & Z 22") in a prog band. Both over my ft. Just the Rock 21, these days. However, I have a late 70's 20" 505 crash that has a nice washy ride sound, over my one ride tom.B

505's have a charm all their own. I miss mine.

Hey Drummingbulldog,

I just bought that same Gretsch hammered snare this week. have not set it up with the kit yet. I'm thinking it may need a muffler fitted.. what do you think.. & what heads are you using..??

I am using two rides, 21" Rock & 20" Med.. both Zild, 16" Paiste & 18" Armand Crashes.. plus a 70's 10" Zildjian splash..

Cheers

It all depends on which kit I am playing. On my "wedding kit", there's a ride on each side of me. Lately, I've been using a smaller kit with only one ride....

Thats not many rides...for so many Brides.

Once again Bunny takes a pole...sounds painful! lol!

I use 2 rides, 1 left (22" Paiste Trad) & 1 right (20" Paiste Sig Flat) as well as a 20" Paiste Trad Swish over my left side floors that is mainly used as a ride for Jazz. Got a couple other Sig rides that filter in & out, but these are my favorite go-to's. The right-side flat ride is mounted vertically over my hats (ala Carter B.) & used as an alternative to playing ghostnotes on the snare...it helps me keep my hands open & believe me, I need all the help I can get! LOL! The 22" Trad is mounted with a slight tilt & very close to being directly in front of me, and the Swish is mounted at a slight tilt over my 14" & 16" floors on the left. Used this set-up for 7 years now & love it...I love all the colors my Paistes give me! I no longer play live (due to my back) so it is feasible to use a set-up like this in my home studio, but if I were still playing live, I would still use 2.

I don't take poles nor smoke them; but I sure do like taking a POLL. LOL

I think through my discovery phase I have discovered that I like Sig alloy for rides and 2K2 alloy for crashes.

Your set up sounds interesting. I need more $$$ before I get that many pies!!!

Ufip 17" Class series swish with a sizzle-chain on my left and an 18" A Zildjian taken from a pair of orchestral hand-held crash cymbals from sometime in the 60's (probably) -with a "bite" filed out of the edge where it was cracked, on my right.

So, I guess you could say that my two rides are more crashes. But, there didn't used to be a delineation between the two back in the old days. I don't know when people started differentiating crashes and rides.

So the you're in the "who needs a ride?" camp. That's cool. I surmise that they probably didn't name cymbals crash and ride until the modern music that required heavier cymbals came into being.

Actually, I see the term more of an application of drumming technique than I do as a type of cymbal. I "ride" my "crash" cymbals and I crash my ride cymbals.

I do however realize that the cymbal making industry has seen a much better way to sell cymbals by differentiating them.

Certainly it's more technique. I, for one like cymbals sold as types rather than by weight, as it just makes life easier when it comes to picking cymbals; however, my Signature Bright Ride could have been sold as a crash ride or heavy crash!! Play it with a 5B or 2B and it is a deep crash.

Funny enough, the 3 cymbals I mentioned are among the ones I have the least money in. All totaled, I have a little over $400 combined in these babies. Got all 3 off of eBay auctions over a period of 4 years...I look for items that fall thru the cracks...that's how I acquired all 3 of these. Got the 22" Trad for $132, the 20" Flat Sig for $98 & the 20" Trad Swish for $111. None of the 3 had any cracks, keyholes or dings...the Swish had a little warp-age on the edge, but it was acquired from a charity auction in L.A. & is autographed by John D. (System of a Down) and he had played it in their charity concert. With the combined shipping, the total was just under $435. I spent almost that much on my 22" Sig Dry Ride that's been sitting in the wings waiting it's turn, I use it every once in a while, but the 22" Trad medium-light is the best ride I've ever owned. I'll never buy another new cymbal!...I could go on sleezeBay right now & buy everything in my collection (almost) and save several thousand dollars! It's a buyers market right now...you're a Bunny!...GET BUSY!!!! LOL!Yes Sir
