Just stripped the 12 inch rack tom down to clean/wax/polish and came across the nasty chip that does extend to the bearing edge. Any suggestions on a repair for this? Just wood fill it? Leave it alone and hope it tunes up all right?

I think I would replace the tom holder with an original style consolete and loose the Ludwig mounts. Thats just me though.
I already ordered the original parts! I will try to get it back to as original as possible!

Could always take Gretsch up on the "Shell Guaranteed for life", :-).
I would glue in a patch piece cut as close to possible to the missing area. Extacto knife works well for cutting the patch. Bit of filler and light sanding and call it a day. Curious why that area failed. Maybe check for other loose spots while you are at it.
Just wood filler has no strength and does not adhere well unless the surface is air compressor blasted to get rid of all dust. Still doesn't stick all that great water thinned somewhat better.
I limit wood filler use to just 1/16" voids. Larger area's the filler does not finish well and shows badly.
As is should be fine. Not ideal but good to go.
Hope of some help.
