Had some decisions to make on the kick drum. The hole the previous owner drilled for the Ludwig Tom Mount was super rough (probably done with a jig saw) and it damaged the original vent hole where the badge was placed in the center of the drum. So I decided to make the kick more in the style of a Gretsch Bop drum of the early 60's that had a diamond plate in the center of the kick drum. Luckily the top and bottom holes of a Gretsch Diamond plate match the Ludwig Diamond plate perfectly! Two less holes I had to fill. The tricky part here was smoothing out the rough hole created for the Ludwig Tom Mount and creating an all maple plug that would still be small enough that the Gretsch Diamond Plate would cover most of the repair. Lots of very careful hand sanding to get this just right.

Rough Cut Left By Previous Owner:

Smoothed Out And Ready For New All Maple Plug:

All Plugged Up:

Final Plug of the original vent/badge hole and Tom Mount:

Plugs covered with Burgandy Sparkle Wrap:

And with the diamond plate back in place:

Now I will patch up the interior and start putting this beauty back together!

Getting so close I can almost taste it now!

Nice job on those plugs. Yes lots of time sanding-fitting-sanding-fitting etc..... I had to do the same thing on my 13" RK tom. It had a 2" hole with another next to it which required a cresent shaped plug. Fun isn't it?? LOL. But those look wonderful and great job on them. First time you play them you'll forget about all the little PIA's involved. ;)

Thanks FFR428! It's crazy how close you think you are after you have the new plug cut. When really you are hours of sanding away to get the right fit.
