From Purdie Shuffle

robyn - Mick is picking up a set of coated Evans G2's for the toms tomorrow. 12", 13", 16". The G2's are just like REMO Emperors. Between the coated G2's on top and the clear G1 reso's on the bottom, the drums are going to sound great! I'll ship them out asap. Gotta get em first!John

Thank you much john....n mick too. Cant wait to get the new heads mounted n tuned up so i can hear just how good them luddys can sing.

You are a good friend john and i appreciate you very much and everything you have done for me.

And a special thanks to MickM for taking the time to pick up the heads. Appreciate your time Mick, thank you.

Jeff - Evans G1 and G2 heads roughly correspond to REMO's Emperors and ambassadors.

The combination you suggested is the same as what she's getting only from Evans instead of REMO. REMO has had some problems with their coated heads recently so I've been sticking to Evans pretty much. Evans makes an always reliable, and high quality coated drum head. Otherwise, what you recommended is exactly what she's getting! Good call! :p

Great kit Robyn! Clapping Happy2

I recently got a set of 66 Hollywoods (with an incorrect tom) and I need to spend some time cleaning them up. They have lots if scratches too but the Sky Blue Pearl wrap hides a lot of it.

If you get to working on them please post some pics in a new thread in the restoration section of the forum. We just love to watch old drums like Robyns come back from the dead.

Thank you!

thanks for your comment jeff. it took some time and elboe grease but all well worth it, look how nice they turned out.

Novus is the way to go to clean up the shells and then i used cheap toothpaste to clean and shine up the chrome parts.

you should start a new thread and show off your hollys we'd love to see them. good luck with your restore.

Robyn - Thanks! I started a thread today.

Purdie - can you explain this some more? - "When you swap out the heads, get some 00-00 steel wool and a little bee's, or butchers wax and rub it onto the bearing edges with the 00-00 wool. Then pop the heads on. The drums will tune up great and easy."

Thanks,

Jeff

Jeff - Try it! No explanation will be necessary. All you're doing is sealing, smoothing and lubricating the bearing edges. Drum heads will not snag on the edges when you're tuning up the kit. Because the heads will slide over the edges more easily, the drums tune up quickly, easily and with no funny business.

robyn - Mick was by today! He dropped off the heads for your kit. (He also dropped something off for me that I'm going to show off in another thread!) I'll get the new heads in the mail to you tomorrow, or Monday the latest. Treat the edges on the shells the way I recommended. That kit is going to look and sound GREAT!

BTW - Start saving your money again!!! I just picked up a 1965 Ludwig Jazzfest in red sparkle. Matches your kit perfectly! Not going to be cheap though... I'm going to put it up for sale in about a week or so. Look out for it.

Is it common for 60s bearing edges have the white paint on them?
