You are correct they are your drums for this moment?? But is a shame you are going to take perfectly good Gretsch drums and re wrap them, I am probably the staunchest proportion of leaving drums original on this forum. They will be devalued greatly from what you are thinking. to re wrap is going to cost another $300.00 + which is going towards 1K in your total cost. you will not recover that cost in a sale down the road. We/you do not own those drums you are only renting them. Someone owned them before you someone will own them after you.It would be a shame is all I have to say.

Let me get this straight...it is not ok to add extra holes to drums, but to rip the original perfect finish off is OK?
Sure looks like you drilled extra holes into 2 of the toms you recovered...and I doubt the repro Radio King lugs you put on the BD fit the original holes.....
Blue Sparkle is run of the mill...White Satin Flame is not!
I have fought the Taliban in Afghanistan, was engaged in direct ground combat in Iraq (both with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Infantry), 40 jumps out of perfectly good airplanes with a combat load, 100 combat air assaults in Afghanistan and have a total of 4 overseas tours and 12 years in defending the free speach and expression of a lot of folks. I also spent a few years in Army special operations. If I want to do as I please with my drums then I will; period. If I chose to share that online then I do so expressing my freedom of speach. If you do not like it then please don't read this particular thread.

So i get it. but what you are thinking about doing is not a good thing !!! you posted your thoughts here and now you are getting what you don't want too hear, It is freedom of speech !!
That's right!
Better get the popcorn out for this one....think it is going to be a long ride......
BTW Airborne, how much $$$ /energy did you put in the recovered drums, and what do you think you could get for them now?
I am the third generation to serve in war. Grandpa WW2, Dad Vietnam and me OEF/OIF. This kit is last in line for any work. The snare though I plan on recording some demos with soon. Anyway my main goal of go to vintage drum sounds for studio work has been reached! Cool1

airborneSFC,
First, thank you for your military service. Your list of duties/tours are something to be very proud of.
Secondly, yes they are your drums and you can do what ever you like with them. But, you did post the following:
So fellas was this a good score? I might just sell it outright or sell the hardware and cymbals to finance fixing up the rest of the kit. Cool thing is I could just throw heads on it and play.
You were asking for member's opinions and that's what you got. :) There are a lot of very knowledgeable members that have been doing the vintage thing for years. They are just looking out for your investment. Paying $700 for what you have was a very good deal. Cleaned up, these drums could possibly fetch upwards of $1,500. Removing the original wrap and re-wrapping will turn them into $700 - $800 drums. Plus, you're also going to pay over $300 for the new wrap and there is also the possiblity that you will damage the shells while removing the wrap.
No one's "telling" you what to do with "your" drums. We're just looking out for your future investment, if you ever decide to sell them. That's all.
You mentioned re-wrapping in blue sparkle. Check this out:

Steve Maxwell might be interested in a combination trade/cash deal. Just a thought.
