Once you get over the initial enjoyment of a Gretsch kit from that era, then have that closer look and start to us it; after which dissappointment sets in because of all the cheesy hardware, get a Rogers kit from that era and you'll be in drum love. Take that all you Gretsch lovers! (LOL - Make sure your Rogers doesn't have B&B lugs).

I do agree that Rogers hardware was the best, but at the same time that stuff weighs a ton!

I love the disclaimer: "Make sure your Rogers doesn't have B&B lugs". ;) Talk about "cheesy". On top of that, the engineers didn't even make the beaver-tail lugs holes the same size, so Rogers owners with broken B&B lugs couldn't easily replace/upgrade to the new style. For for clarification, I'm a lucky owner of both brands and this is just a fun Gretsch vs. Rogers jab. :D

I hope we can at least agree that the sound of a "jazz tuned" Gretsch kit is quite amazing.

I'm sure the splintering is more common than you think. They needed to pump out drums to keep up with demand in the 60's. When the bits got dull and the press operator was backed up, that's when QC went to the wayside. Remember the workers were just workers and not the fanatics like us. :)Are the tom bearing edges the round-over type and the bass drum bearing edge something like a 45-degree on the inside and slight round-over on the outside?-Tim

Tim,

Yes the toms are all round over from the inside ply out. The bass drum is something like a 45.

Original heads on the bass drum! Yes I think the Rogers were the highest quality drums of their time. I would say in this order; Rogers, Gretsch and Ludwig at least from what I have seen. Yeah I know back in the day folks were just turning these drums out without the level of QC we are used to now.

I would like to jump in here and say thank you for your service.

As to the drums, I personally find blue sparkle to be pretty pedestrian but as with most finishes, I like them when they are on drums. As to the effect of theatrical lighting, under blue or white light, a blue kit will look blue. Under yellow it will look green and under green and red will look near black. A white kit on the other hand will simply reflect whatever color is focused on it. Just for point of reference of course.

Your welcome! Of course when I joined years ago had no clue what I got myself into. After I left active duty I got bored after a while and joined the Reserves. Not 100% set on blue sparkle; honestly was thinking this color -

I did email Steve to see if he was interested in a trade. I have to say he is the most responsive person I ever dealt with. Very top notch guy all around.

Hardware was sent off to a forum member today :) So my total current investment in this kit is $400. Shawn contacted me today with a quote and for another $400 I can get it recovered.

Steve also contacted me and offered me a very fair deal on a trade in towards a kit in a finish I wanted. So far the math is on me sticking with my original plan.

Well I had not heard any definitive word if anyone wanted these sight unseen. He was offered $1k but that person backed off. I offered $500 because I wanted just the 3 piece kit but I took it home for $700. Technically it's in my office but close enough.Original trap case maybe??Needs a little TLC but it worksPerfect condition hi hat stand! So fellas was this a good score? I might just sell it outright or sell the hardware and cymbals to finance fixing up the rest of the kit. Cool thing is I could just throw heads on it and play.

So..for only $400,you can get them recovered, only to make them worth way less then they are as is ???

But Steve has the exact ORIGINAL color you want, but you don't want to do it?

Doesn't make sense to me...

Steve would give me at most about $650 or up to half towards the kit he is selling. That means it would cost me $200 more (not including shipping) vs the route I want to take. If I want to have nothing into it I can sell off the snare and cymbals still.

My route:

$700 - kit purchase

-$300 - Hardware Sold

- $20 - Sold extra bass drum pedal I got with purchase

------------------------------

$380 as it is with a snare and cymbals

+ $400 if I want to re finish

----------------------------

$780 into it with a finish I want

Trade in route:

$1600 for the kit in NY

- $650 Trade in (high end and not including snare which I won't give up)

----------------------------

$950 and that does not cover shipping either way

Steve himself said (that while it would lower the value) if I was happy with the way my kit sounded and it made it look better then go for it.

I see...thanks for that..

OR..a different scenario....sell your kit online/on here for more $$ then Steve is offering...buy his kit for cash?
