Some wore-out drums! Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Anyway, I would "seal" the ENTIRE drum shell with Polyurethane (Min-Wax brand..... Clear, Satan finish). You can apply it with a rag, but, I prefer paper towels, BUT, be careful, You may get fibers from the paper towel (or rag) into the polyurethane. If you do, you can re-sand with 220 in those spots and try again. It takes a lot of patience, but, I nevermind the little fibers, it's hard to tell they are there.

Thanks, Ludwigdrummer. I was planning on sealing the inside of the shells. I'm gonna use the Min-Wax poly clear satin in a spray can. I used this on a '70s 3 ply 20" maple Luddy tom shell refurb that I added to my outfit. Looks just like it came from Ludwig! I know the mahogany will probably "soak" it up more than the maple. May take a couple of spray-on coats. But like you said, just wanna get nice coat to protect it. Lord knows, there's no tell'n where Dad may end up on some gigs. They sometimes perform out-doors at church picnics & festivals.

I also remember reading a thread on this board somewhere by "fungus-amungus" the he too, likes to seal the inside of his drum shells to enhance the tone.

Wouldn't clear laquer be a better choice than Polyurethane?

Very nice, those drums are going to look great. I just re-wraped some old Slingerlands and was going with the WMP but none of the wraps available looked right to me. I ended up useing the Vintage Sky Blue Pearl and very very happy with the way they look.

LD, I enjoyed the 3k+4k snare story. Glad you finally obtained that rare and elusive beast.

I have used both poly and laquer on some snares I made as well as some restores, with great success. As you stated the laquer allows the wood to breath where the Poly seals it in. I also find the poly easier to work with, but for a vintage drum I would go with the laquer assuming it was originally laquered on the inside. Keeping it more toward the original intent of Slingerland. I suppose it just comes down to a preference. I mostly just use lemon oil on the inside of some older drums that appear dried out. For newer drums, it just depends on my mood really as to whether I use Laquer or oil. The outside I lean toward Laquer, but like I mentioned, poly is easier to use and poly looks good. . . .James

Here's an update. The rack tom and bass are about done. Still working on the floor tom shell.

Here's a sneak-peek of the rack tom: original re-chromed cob hoops & t-rods. Original lugs & tone control polished out real nice. Original lug screws are re-zinc plated. Blue/White MP wrap. I sealed the inside with a few spray-on coats of clear shellac, smoothed it out with 360 sandpaper and sprayed on a couple of more coats. Heads are Coated Ambassador-X top & clear Diplomat bottom.

The inside ply of the floor tom has delaminated quite a bit. I'm repairing it a section at a time by injecting glue under the inside ply with an insulin syringe and clamping like shown here. I got the syringe idea here on the forum. The foil is to keep from gluing the wood clamp braces to the shell. The blue tape dots mark areas of delamination to be fixed.

I'll reveal the whole set once the floor tom is completed. Should be done here in about a week...
