Acrolite Love- Fest! Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Hi All,

I recently acquired a 'missing link' in my little 'early-date' Acrolite collection. I thought I'd show them off. It's not often you get to see all of the early Acro's in one place. I had a 6.5"x14" NYC Board of Ed 10-lug Acrolite, but I sold it in 1996. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for having sold that one. I'd have every early Acro in my collection if not for selling the 6.5". Two out of the three of these I got from my buddy Mike Layton. The guy buys well! Any time he puts a drum up for sale, I find myself reaching for my wallet.

Enjoy the pix. (*Apologies for the dust on #3! I didn't notice the dust until after I took the photos.)

Here is an old photo of the Keystone NYC Board of Ed Acro... wish I still had this one!

Show your Acro-Love! Post shots of your favorite Acro's I know they are out there! These are one of my favorite all-around snare drums.

Super awesome John. You need to hunt another 6.5 down while you're in "buying mode." Its just the right thing to do!!!

Those 6.5's with a keystone are rarer than hens teeth! It would cost me over $1000 to replace it and it just wouldn't be the same. The one I had was rare, most of them are found with school names and NYC Board of Ed -scratched- into the shells! The one I found was labelled Ft. Hamilton H.S. Bklyn, N.Y. and they used red nail polish! It came off with a little nail polish remover and the shell was pristine. I found it in the basement of a pawn shop in Queens, NY in 1993. I got it for $20. I sold it for $500 which I thought was an 'outrageous price' for it. That's why I sold it, the offer (at the time, 1996,) was just too good to pass up.

I'm still kicking myself hard for having sold it.

I have but one, and no photo handy, but it's unquestionably my desert island snare.

Funny thing is, when I was first shopping for one, a guy had a Supraphonic on CL for $80 US, figuring that the Supraphonic was just as legendary and that they would sound pretty much the same.

The Supra was LOUD, so loud that I still don't like playing it indoors, and tonally, I was underwhelmed.

Year or so later, a guy has an Acrolite on CL for $60, missing heads, strainer and batter hoop; no problem, I have replacements for all in my spares bin, including a period-correct P-85. And it has my favorite Acrolite finish, the grey anodized.

Got 'er all put together and tuned up and HOLY MOTHER OF TONE. It has a body and an airiness that I do not hear in my Supraphonic. Must be due to the difference in lug mass. Lighter ones, and fewer of them on the Acro.

I have some "legendary" snares in my small collection, and the Acrolite smokes them all.

You don't have to sell me! Before this thread is over, we'll hear from a bunch of guys about how much they love their Acro's. One of the most underrated drums out there.

Here, I will go first. These are just drums that came with kits I bought over the years. No real money invested, if you consider what I paid for each kit and what came with them, well then these were almost free.

Both my parents went to that high school! My father was a studio drummer in NYC after he graduated.

Perhaps you'll get lucky again. All beautiful drums you have there.
