59' Ludwig Transition Badge Rewrap Last viewed: 0 seconds ago

Howdy -

I'm putting this thread in the 'vintage drum' section because it is a rewrap job and not a restoration.

A week ago I purchased a 59' Luddie Hollywood kit that was missing the floor tom. The purchase included a Jazzfest snare, two - 8"x12" rack toms, and a 14"x22" bass drum in Sky Blue Pearl. I already have a 16" orphan in SBP from the mid-60's so the kit is essentially complete.

I was hoping to sand the wrap, get rid of the nasty stuff and then clear-coating it. No good... when the drums arrived and I had a chance to inspect the wrap up close and personal they are all ROACHED! Not worth the trouble. It's badly stained, cracked, and dull. As much as I hate to do it, in order to save the kit it's going to take a rewrap.

These transition badge drums are going to be keepers for me, I love these 59' kits. I have decided to break with tradition and wrap the kit for myself, not to keep it true to the original finishes offered by Ludwig at the time.

Delmar has just released a new version of the old Slingerland Capri finish! The new one has more color in it, turquoise is a featured fleck in the finish. I will be the first kit that Precision Drums will use this new wrap on. It only just came out yesterday! Check it out and tell me what you guys think: There is a swatch of the new Capri near the top of the page.

I love it myself. I can't wait to see it on these drums! I'll post photos down the road after I have them back together. I started the thread now because I wanted get your opinions on the new finish.

John, Not sure if you saw this thread but this Rogers 3pc came with a transition badge Luddy floor tom in duco with major paint flake. Not sure if the seller is looking to separate and you already have a later shell for your project. I think his intent was to sell the 4 drums. Just thought I'd pass it along. Drums for thought...

John,I think it will look great, and some time in the future,on a future VDF,they'll be debating on weither or not, the kit was custom Ludwig ,or a rewrap.:D

Can't wait to see pics.

Gary - Thanks but I already had a good candidate. The shells went out today! This go round I'm paying Precision to strip the old wrap and apply the new one. All I'll have to do is to reassemble them when they arrive back here. Precision will have the drums on Monday and I expect to have them back by the end of the week. (According to Andrea.)

Steve - Yeah, I'm psyched to see how these turn out. After spending two solid months working on Big Blue, I opted to take a break and let Precision do all the labor this time. Those guys do good work, so I'm confident I'll be getting back a first class job from them. Photos when I have em put together! :D

So what do you guys think of the new Capri finish? I think it kills. Can't wait to see it on a set of drums. The sh*t is EXPENSIVE! $425 to cover four shells - just for wrap!

I actually think I like that more than the original! What price group is it?

John, Glad your project is off and shipped. The costs will not be as important when the results come in. Can't wait to see it all together. Congrats on a fine start- drum shells in motion!

I think they're going to have to create a new price category for this wrap! I almost fell out of my chair when Andrea told me how much the wrap would cost. I imagine it'll end up in the high-end price group. (D) And yes, I like it much more than the original. I think Delmar got this one spot-on. Because it's the first kit Precision will be wrapping in the new Capri finish they asked me for photos for the site after they're done.

Gary - Photos by next week-end 'I hope!' :D

That wrap is "KILLER" John and i`m looking forward to pics down the line as well.Would love to see the look on your face when you get these dressed-up babies in front of your eyes.I somehow think it may ease that initial $ layout at least to some degree and you`ll have the first kit wrapped in the new "Capri" colour right beneath your hands.Just doesn`t get any sweeter than that...

I'm psyched to see them too. It's going to be a long week! LOL

My favorite part is peeling the protective plastic covering off the wrap for the first time... the colors just pop out at you in all their glorious intensity. I'll take some shots when I open the boxes! :D

... and even though I'm whining a little about the price, after I saw the wrap swatch, price was no object. I just had to have it.

Those should be nice John. I did a wet sanding attempt on a pre serial sky blue pearl marcher a few months back. It had faded to real dark blue and almost black. I sanded and sanded and never got into any light blue. I finally went more and more fine and polished back to a gloss. Its better but certainly not a success. I'm in no hurry to ever do that again.

Will precision be able to send you any of the old wrap or is it not good for anything?

I love that new Capri. That's always been one of my fave wraps too though ive never seen one in person. Do you do the drilling or do they do it? Never had anything wrapped before.
